Description:

What rights do you have as an American citizen?  What powers does the government have?  And what is the line between the two?  These questions are important not just for high school government class but also for how we live our lives.  It is the goal of this class to answer these and many more questions about our government.  We will also define different types of government and compare and contrast with the American system.  This class will be highly interactive and participatory.  There will be weekly homework, occasional quizzes, and at least one paper and one project.  If you are interested in government, politics, history, debate, or even just individual rights, this class will have something for you.

Required text books:

  • copy of the US Constitution (with amendments)
  • copy of the Declaration of Independence 
  • You Decide! Applying the Bill of Rights to Real Cases by George Bundy Smith
