Bruce Etter, a former administrator and favorite teacher at Veritas Press and Wilson Hill Academy, has launched a weekly online book club called Alyosha Society. The cost is $40 per month.

Each course will tackle questions like:
  • How can we learn how to read a book for maximum enrichment and enjoyment?

  • What do you need to know before diving into this book?

  • How much can we learn about one single author and his/her work?

  • How does the worldview of the author impact how we view the world around us?

  • How does this work line up with biblical truth?

Order of topics beginning January 26:

1. Brief discussion on "How to Read a Novel" (first meeting)

2. Brief overview of Russian history / philosophical context of 19th century Russia (second meeting)

3. Brief biographical material on Fyodor Dostoevsky (second and third meetings)

4. Six to eight weeks discussing Crime and Punishment (begin third meeting)

5. Begin our second novel, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, around early May

6. Aim for Wise Blood in June

Symbols and motifs to look for as you read Crime and Punishment:

a. significance of the colors yellow, green, red

b. things that are split or divided

c. crosses

d. bells and the sound of bells ringing / other things that ring
