Dyslexia Presentation by Faith Burnett

Faith Burnett is a homeschooled high school junior from Spearfish, has held titles in the Miss SD's Outstanding Teen program the last few years, and has a passion for classical/opera vocal studies. As the Student Ambassador of Decoding Dyslexia SD, Faith shares her own journey with dyslexia, presenting some of the brain science, warning signs, and education methods used to help students succeed in the classroom. Realizing the power of a diagnosis, and with a heart for helping other children understand their own learning needs, Faith founded the "Dream Your Destiny #Dyslexia Evaluation Fund" providing scholarships for half the screening fee at the USD Speech and Language Clinic in Sioux Falls. Faith has been invited to share her inspirational story as far away as Maine, and presents regularly before classrooms and community groups.

Gubernatorial Panel

This year we’re electing a new governor in South Dakota. As homeschooling grows in our state, we’re beginning to see the importance of electing leaders that are supportive of the rights of homeschooling families. To help understand the positions of our candidates for governor, we have invited all primary candidates that are certified to be on their perspective ballots. Those who have accepted will be available for questions and dialogue during a special Gubernatorial Panel. Check the schedule for the time and location.

Hebrew Escape Room

Based on the escape room concept, join Israel traveler, Jennifer Noble, and use hidden clues, hints and team strategies to discover tidbits of the Hebrew language. Two sessions will be held on Saturday afternoon, one for grades 5-8 and the other for grades 9-12. The activity will be used as a launchpad for a Hebrew and Israeli culture class planned for this fall. Each session will be limited to 20 participants so please sign up on the sheet outside the room.

Legislative Action Presentation

This year was an exciting and monumental year for homeschooling in the South Dakota State Legislature. Julie Christian, homeschool mom and citizen lobbyist, Representative Sue Peterson (District 13) and homeschool mom, and Scott Woodruff, HSLDA, will give their perspectives on the 2018 Legislative Session and the momentum building towards 2019!

Let’s Paint Run-A-Ways

Want to try your hand at painting? Or maybe learn a few more skills on canvas? Back by popular demand is the painting workshop from Let’s Paint Run-A-Ways. Workshops are 2 1/2 hours long and are offered for conference attendees aged 7-adult. The cost for each workshop is $15 and includes required materials and instruction. Participants will complete an original painting in each workshop. Workshop registration will be at the conference near the registration table on a first-come, first-served basis. Check the schedule to confirm the room and times.

STEM Challenge

Kids, come participate in a STEM challenge! Each activity session will present a different problem that must be overcome using Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Both sessions will be held on Friday May 11th. Check the schedule to confirm the room and times.

Visual Skills for Learning - Dr. Ashley Gentrup

There are 17 visual skills that are critical to effective learning, only one of them is related to glasses! When the visual skills are not properly developed, they become barriers affecting the ability to learn. Dr. Gentrup is a developmental optometrist that will discuss the foundational visual skills necessary for learning and what things you can look for if there is a vision problem affecting your child’s academic performance.
Check the schedule to confirm the room and times of this highly informative presentation.

Weather with Brian Karstens

Brian holds weather classes for students in Sioux Falls and the surrounding areas. To learn more about upcoming sessions, please visit briankarstens.com. During the conference, Brian will be holding a free class to introduce students to his weather workshops. Please bring your weather questions for Brian and learn more about severe weather preparedness! Classes will not be held in the case of severe weather, as Brian will be busy. Check the schedule to confirm the room and times.

More activities are being added all the time so please check back often!

2018 Conference - Services

Services

Session Recording

Had to flip a coin to decide which session to attend? Wondered what you might have missed? Wonder no more. Once again, audio of all the conference speaker sessions will be available in mp3 format. Conference attendance is required and service cost is $15. Paid attendees will receive a download link by May 22nd.

Unattended Nursery

Need a place to let the little ones unwind? An unattended nursery is there to provide respite. The nursery is located in room 3, east of the main entrance to the Conference Center. Please note that the respite is not for the adults, the unattended nursery means you'll need to attend to your kids while they're there.

Food

No outside food is allowed in the Conference Center. Lunch and snacks can be purchased from food booths provided by the Conference Center.

Vendor Hall

The Vendor Hall will be open from 9:00am - 6:00pm on both Friday and Saturday. These hours should provide plenty of time to browse and purchase supplies from your favorite vendors and interact with the conference speakers.

Volunteer Safety Team

The Sioux Falls Convention Center is a great big place that's perfect for housing our conference, but it can feel a little too big to comfortably let our kids explore the activities on their own. This year we have a group of highly qualified safety volunteers who will be keeping an eye on our area of the Convention Center. We hope that this will help to return some of the "security" feel that our conference has always enjoyed.

Legislator, Pastor & Grandparent Complimentary Pass

Legislators, non-homeschooling pastors and non-homeschooling grandparents are invited to attend the conference as our guests. SECHE does not endorse any political party, legislator or denomination but instead uses their attendance at the conference to acquaint them with home education as a successful, proven educational choice. Please feel free to take a moment and introduce yourselves to them. Legislators, please bring credentials to receive your free pass.

More services may be added so please keep an eye on this space!

Serving homeschooling families in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota area and surrounding communities since August of 2002; SECHE was initiated at a meeting of like-minded home educators who desired to form a group where their belief and acknowledgment of God was an integral part of their homeschool organization. It is the goal of our organization to honor our Lord Jesus Christ in all of our activities and to encourage families to homeschool in a manner that honors God.

SECHE offers a variety of opportunities to enjoy Christian homeschooling fellowship and encouragement. Social events, educational events and our annual Christian Homeschool Conference are all present on our events calendar. Click over and see what SECHE has to offer your homeschooling family!

SECHE is an official member of the Home School Legal Defense Association and members receive a discount to HSLDA.

"It is the goal of our organization to honor our Lord Jesus Christ in all of our activities and to encourage Christian home educating families to home school in a manner that honors God."

  • We believe the Bible is inspired, inerrant, and infallible Word of God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that a believer may be thoroughly prepared for every good work.
  • We believe that there is one God eternally existent in 3 persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
  • We believe in Jesus Christ as God come in human flesh fully God and fully man except without sin. He was born of a virgin, performed miracles testifying to his deity. He died on the cross for our sins and rose again the third day. He ascended into heaven where he sits at the right hand of God the Father and acts as our great high priest interceding for us and preparing a place for us. We believe in his personal return.
  • We believe that all men have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and that salvation is a free gift offered to sinners. An individual is saved when they turn from their sin and turn to God in faith for salvation. The gift must be received by faith, trusting solely in the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ, not trusting in any personal works to merit salvation.
  • We believe in the personality and deity of the Holy Spirit, who convicts men of sin, and regenerates and indwells those who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ
  • We believe the Bible teaches us that our lives should be transformed as we follow Christ and our conduct will reflect the fact that God is conforming us to the image of His dear Son.
  • We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • We believe that our home school association should reflect and defend these beliefs in all of its activities.
