What is SHIELD?

A:

SHIELD is a Christian Co-Op offering social activities and enrichment classes (Friday School) for Nursery - 12th grade homeschool families. Most of our families live in Northwest Houston, with a lot of our activities taking place near the Cypress area.

Where are you located?

A:

Most of our activities take place in the Cypress-Fairbanks area of Harris County (see map below).

We meet for Friday School at a church in the near Highway 6 and Clay in the Bear Creek area.

What type of social activities does SHIELD offer?

A:

SHIELD is a volunteer co-op with varying social activities on our calendar.  We offer:

  • Field Trips

Membership

Q:

What are the requirements to be a SHIELD member?

A:

We are a Christian organization, and all members are required to sign our Statement of Faith in order to join.

Each family is expected to attend two events per semester and assist in planning at least one activity or event per semester.

All activities require a parent to be present; no drop-off.

Families joining Friday School must have at least one school-age (5 years old) child when the semester begins. Families with younger children are still welcome to attend any social events we offer (park days, field trips, etc.).

Annual membership is $40 annually, and families can join any time.

What is the cost to join SHIELD?

A:

Annual Family Membership is $40 and is valid from Aug 1 - Jul 31. Families are welcome to join at any time.  As we offer a lot of activities throughout the year, there is no discounted rate for joining later in the school year.

Friday School registration is an additional $50 per family per semester. Charges for class supplies are typically $5-10 per class.

If you would like to join Friday School but registration is closed, you may join the waitlist for the next semseter.

Q:

What responsibilities do SHIELD parents have?

A:

 

  1. You need to be there when your kids are there, no drop off.
  2. We like for everyone to help plan one or two events during the year. We always welcome new ideas for field trips, events, teen outings, or Mom's Night Out, etc.
  3. If your family joins Friday School, a parent has to help teach a class with a partner. New members are paired up with parents who have been doing it for a while. The subject you pick to teach is up to you and your teaching partner.

When is the deadline to sign up for SHIELD?

A:

There is no deadline to sign up for SHIELD - you can join any time. Membership renewal occurs annually on July 31.

The deadline to sign up for Fall Friday School occurs in early summer.

The deadline to sign up for Spring Friday School occurs during the fall.

How can I join SHIELD?

A:

  1. Fill out a Membership Request form on our website.
  2. Fill out the 5 required forms when prompted:
    • Statement of Faith
    • Waiver of Liability
    • Code of Conduct/Dress Code Agreement
    • Photo Release
    • Planning Form
  3. Pay the $40 social membership fee through the website.
  4. Once this is done, your membership application is complete. You will receive an email when your application is approved.
  5. You cam then log into the our website to view the calendar and sign up for upcoming activities. Let us know if you are interested in joining Friday School as well.

Friday School

Q:

What is Friday School?

A:

Friday School is our series of enrichment classes that take place in the Spring and Fall for 8-10 weeks. It is on Friday mornings in the Cypress area. These classes are parent-led and vary from semester to semester offering hands on art classes, STEM classes, drama, messy science, history, singing, etc...  Classes are divided into age groups from the nursery up to teens and are taught by parents in the group. Class fees can range from $2-$10 for the semester depending on the class activities. This is a true co-op and at least one parent in each family must participate in Friday School, there is no drop off. Parents are required to co-teach at least one class.  

To participate in Friday School, you must have at least one child Kindergarten age (5) or older.

What is your Friday School schedule?

A:

We meet for 9-10 Fridays per semester.  Semesters occur from September-November and from February-April, give or take a few weeks.

Here is our schedule:

  • 9:30 a.m. Chapel
  • 10:00 First class
  • 11:00 Second class
  • 12:00 Back to Chapel for dismissal

Q:

Do you have a nursery or preschool at Friday School?

A:

Yes! We have a nursery and preschool class for Friday School for the younger siblings of school-age children.  If you have a child who needs you to be in their class, let us know and we will do our best to assign you to teach/assist in that class.

Q:

What is the deadline to sign up for Friday School?

A:

Friday School registration period is usually from Easter through mid-June for the Fall semester.

Registration for the Spring Semester is usually during the month of November.

More exact dates are posted as the dates approach.

Members who wish to join Friday School outside of the registration periods may join the waitlist for the following semester.
