Current Class Schedule:

Block A

Nursery and Preschool – 0-4

Our class time offers singing, dancing, playing, and story time. We aim to give your child enriching and fun activities! We want your littlest ones to be in a welcoming and comfortable environment. Please label all your child’s cups, coats, diaper bags, etc.

Early Literature Class – 5-8

Together, we will explore several classic and fun children’s books. We will read Curious George, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, among others and do crafts and activities to go along with the stories, including a cooking project. When we are done, we will have a notebook of our stories to show at Presentation Night. Cost: $13

Indian in the Cupboard – 9-11

Omri put a little plastic Indian brave in a cupboard and locks the door with a mysterious skeleton key. In the morning Omri is shocked to discover that the cupboard has somehow brought the Indian to life, and he's a real person, an Iroquois brave named Little Bear. We're going to find out what happens when a toy comes to life. In class, we will read a book called If you Lived with the Iroquois and make a lapbook with the information we learn. This will give us background information about this Indian nation before we read our book. We will listen to The Indian in the Cupboard, make some crafts, try some American Indian recipes and research and make an individual project to display at Presentation Night. Cost: $16

Life Science

Last semester we spent some time learning about animals and the wonderful world they live in. This semester we will continue studying science through research and science experiments. At the semester end we will present what we have learned at a science fair exhibit. This class will require up to an hour of homework each week. Cost: $19

Block B

Focused Preschool Play – 0-6

Our class time offers singing and music, dancing, coloring, playdoh, story time, and playing with friends. This will be a fun time to acclimate to class time for our newest school age kids! Cost: $10

Beginning Ukulele Class – 7+

The ukulele is amazingly suitable for children. It is small and fairly easy to learn to play. Within a few minutes a child with the finger dexterity to press the strings firmly against the finger board can learn their first chord and play a couple of Nursery Rhymes already familiar to them. Like the piano, one can accompany themselves and sing at the same time. Unlike the piano, the Ukulele is very portable and playing chords is easier than picking out a melody. The Ukulele is easier for children than the guitar because it only has four strings. We will be learning to play ukulele in this class. A ukulele will be provided for each student during class time. Cost: $50   (We are offering this class to non-members for $55)

Star Wars Scratch Coding – 8+

Does your child want to spend all day playing video games? Turn that obsession in to a learning opportunity. This introductory class will teach very basic coding skills using Scratch 2.0. Students will design and code simple games using Scratch, inspired by the Star Wars™ universe! Students will be required to bring their own laptop running Windows, OS X, or Linux 32bit to download and run Scratch 2.0. Instructions for downloading Scratch 2.0 will be provided after registration. Cost: $13

Digital Photography – 11+

How do you describe bits of life inside a rectangle? Photography is the exploration of storytelling through pictures. This class will require each student to bring a working camera and be willing to take pictures for homework every week. Lighting, special effects, composition, and capturing personality are a few subjects that will be focused on in this class. Class cost includes printing photos for each student. Cost: $24

Block C

Drama Class – 8+

Become your own character from head to toe. Explore the building blocks of acting through creative movement, story enactment, theater games, imagination journeys, and more! You will be able to use your voice, facial expressions, and whole body, to portray everything from a swashbuckling pirate to an Oompa Loompa. Cost: $50

Russian Language Class – 8+

Have you wondered what the kids on the playground are saying when you hear the Russian language? We have Russian neighbors that we see at the park, the grocery store, and the local bakery. Nadia will teach her students about the difference between Ukrainian and Russian, how to greet someone in Russian, and other common phrases. She spent several years studying Russian and telling people in Russian the good news about Jesus. We have the privilege of learning from her this semester. Cost: $50  (We are offering this class to non-members for $55)

Classes are subject to change based on enrollment and student needs.

First Choice of Central Portland

We are a Christian Homeschool Co-op in the heart of the Portland area reaching out to homeschooling families and connecting them in the community.

Are you looking for a one-day-a-week program for your outside activities?  Friday School is what you’re looking for!

What is Friday School?

Friday School is a wonderful, one day-a-week cooperative program at the heart of the First Choice Central Portland ministry.  We meet for classes at Glisan St. Baptist Church during two sessions each year: Fall and Spring.  Each session runs about eight to ten weeks, depending on the calendar year and holidays.

What We Do

Nursery and early childhood education program one day-a-week

Kindergarten-High School classes one day-a-week

Encourage homeschool parents

Help new homeschoolers get started

Organize group field trips for families

Offer new friendships and opportunities for students

Christ-centered community outreach to homeschooling families

Friday School is only possible through the cooperative effort of all our members.  Each Friday during our sessions, all enrolled families come together for a half day of chapel, classes, fellowship, and fun!

Why We Do It

Our heart is to come alongside, connect, encourage, lift up, and support homeschooling families like yours.  We believe that God has equipped you with everything you need to educate your children at home.  Our mission is to help build up a community of Christian homeschoolers that will help you go the distance.   We look forward to serving alongside you, and ministering to your family in a way that will encourage and inspire you.
