Additional Information

SMICA will be hosting the Birmingham District Spelling Bee on Monday, January 22, in the SMCC Chapel. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the Bee will begin by 10:00.  All homeschooled students who are 14 and younger, who have not yet completed the 8th grade and who are enrolled in a Scripps-enrolled school or association are eligible to participate.

To register, please send the following information to spellingbee@bellsouth.net: the speller's name, age and school grade, and the name and cell phone number of the driver on the day of the bee.

When you arrive at the bee, you will be asked for a $2 registration fee and for proof of enrollment in a Scripps-enrolled school. If you are enrolled in Learning at Home, please bring the enrollment email you received from Laura Ann Tipps. If you are enrolled in SMICA, please bring a teacher ID or any correspondence from your administrator. Your proof of enrollment will need to be seen but not kept.

After the bee, everyone is invited to stay for refreshments/lunch. Please bring a finger food and a drink to share. NO NUTS OR PRODUCTS CONTAINING NUTS, PLEASE.

The top three spellers will be eligible to compete in the Homeschool County Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 10, at Community Presbyterian Church in Moody. The winner of the Homeschool County Spelling Bee will represent Alabama homeschoolers at the Alabama Bee on Saturday, March 10, location TBA.

If you have any questions, please contact Laura Ann Tipps, Alabama Homeschool Spelling Bee Coordinator, at latipps@gmail.com, or Melissa Smith, Birmingham District Spelling Bee Coordinator, at spellingbee@bellsouth.net.

SMICA Families: We would like to have 3 or 4 high school students to help with set-up, registration and greeting from 8:30 until 10:00, in the SMCC Chapel. Volunteers will not be needed once the bee begins at 10:00, but they are welcome to stay and observe the bee if they wish.  If your teen is available to help, please contact Melissa Smith.
