About Us

SHRC is NOT a school but a support group located in Orcutt/Santa Maria, California. We do not provide classes or curriculum, although we do have access to an extensive lending library.

We DO offer mentoring, community, and Christian fellowship through park days, field trips, special activities, mom's nights, and periodic seminars or workshops. Co-ops and collaborative learning opportunities sprout from the connections and relationships made here.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

(Hebrews 10:24-25)

Our History

Our group was started in the late 1980's by a handful of families desiring to educate their children in the ways of God. This was before homeschooling had become mainstream, before it had been declared legal in all 50 states, and before most curriculum publishers would sell to individual families. They stepped out in faith, encouraged one another, and pooled their resources.

In this way, a foundation was laid.

By the early 1990's, this small collaboration of friends had become the Christ-centered homeschooling ministry known as Hearthstone. Under the loving guidance of founding member Cheryl Kliewer and the Advisory Board, the ministry continued to address the changing needs of private home educators.

Over the course of 30 years, the original families graduated their children and the baton of ministry leadership was handed off to the next wave.

In 2023, Hearthstone joined together with Horizons Enrichment Co-op and The Lending Library at Pine Grove Baptist Church. This made it possible to better serve the needs of member families. The name was changed to Selah Homeschool Resource Center (SHRC).

The biblical meaning of “Selah” is generally interpreted as to exalt, to lift-up, to pause and contemplate, and to rest. The foundation of our ministry is to lift up families, exalt the Lord in our homeschools, frequently pause and contemplate God’s will, and seek rest in His strength and promises.

Today, SHRC carries on the Hearthstone mission. That is, we remain dedicated to coming alongside parents as they answer God's call to freely homeschool their children.
