In this class we will be studying the music of the Shona people of Zimbabwe, Africa. We will be playing mbira and marimba music arranged for orff xylophone ensemble.
Shona-style marimba music is one of the best types of music in the world for developing musical ability in kids. Concentration, cooperation and listening skills develop as they focus on their part and learn to hear how it fits into a larger pattern. Their sense of timing is refined through the repetition of patterns which rely on a strong pulse. Best of all, the music opens them up to the intangible groove --- the inherent musical feeling and attitude shaped by those wonderful syncopations which make you want to dance and sing.
This is a small, advanced ensemble that will be performing at Home Front's Celebration of the Arts. Prior musical experience is necessary. All students must have been a part of Advanced Percussion Ensemble as a prerequisite. If you have any questions about this group please contact the teacher via e-mail.
There is a one time supply fee of $5 included in the first month fee.
