The purpose of this class is to introduce students to the art and science of logical thinking. We will learn all about correct patterns of thinking and arguing while learning to identify and avoid logical fallacies. Logical fallacies are common mistakes that people make when trying to prove something: we will learn how to identify a host of them, including "equivocation," "ad hominem," "red herring," and "circular reasoning," among many others. Students who complete this course will be well-prepared to move on to Logic II, which would consist of systematic training in formal logic.
The textbook for this course is The Fallacy Detective, written by Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn. It is sold at a reasonable price at both amazon.com and christianbook.com.
