Statement of Purpose

Brookhaven Home Educators is a Christian organization that provides encouragement, support and inspiration to homeschool families in the Brookhaven and surrounding areas as they seek God’s will in educating their children. We are a local volunteer support group and are affiliated with Mississippi Home Educators Association. We have purposed that Brookhaven Home Educators and all its activities and publications will be consistently and forthrightly Christian to the honor and glory of the Lord God. It is our purpose as an organization to work together to uplift and encourage each other, to keep each other aware of current events and legislation affecting home education, and to provide opportunities for academic enrichment and social activities. Our goal in Brookhaven Home Educators is to minister to homeschool families as we strive to do what God has called us to do.

As an organization, we do not provide or endorse textbooks or curriculum; we do not provide teachers; we do not provide legal advice; we do not endorse or support any business ventures. Brookhaven Home Educators is not a church nor is this organization meant to replace the ministry of the local church to the home education family.

Each family within this group is independent and autonomous. Each family selects its own curriculum, course of instruction and is responsible for the conduct of its own members. In that respect, we adhere to the position of MHEA regarding the definition of "homeschooling" as stated below:

Mississippi Home Educators Association (MHEA) does not endorse programs that provide “home education” services for a fee. MHEA believes that true home education is that performed primarily by parents/guardians or under their direct supervision.  In our view, to send one’s children to a third party for the most or all of their lessons is to send one’s children to another kind of private school – even if the instruction takes place in a third party’s house.

MHEA’s view of home education expressed above does not exclude the parents/guardians utilizing third parties for particularized subjects. For example, a parent with a particular skill set can provide workshops to children (and parents!) in a home school support group. Likewise, there is nothing wrong with hiring tutors for specialized subjects, such as advanced mathematics or to learn a musical instrument. These kinds of activities supplement – but should not replace – what the parents are doing in the home. True home education can even include internet-based teaching within the home since that kind of instruction would be under the supervision of the parents/guardians.

In our current social climate, we also believe it is necessary to clarify that we believe God wonderfully and immutably creates each person as male or female. These two distinct, complementary genders together reflect the image and nature of God. (Gen 1:26-27.) Rejection of one’s biological sex is a rejection of the image of God within that person.

We believe that the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated in Scripture. (Genesis 2:18-25) We believe that God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other. (1 Corinthians 6:18; 7:2-5; Hebrews 13:4) We believe that God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman.

We believe that any form of sexual immorality (including adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, and use of pornography) is sinful and offensive to God. (Matthew 15:18-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10)

We believe that in order to preserve the function and integrity of Brookhaven Home Educators, it is imperative that all members agree to and abide by this Statement on Marriage, Gender, and Sexuality. (Matthew 5:16; Philippians 2:14-16; 1 Thessalonians 5:22)

We believe that God offers redemption and restoration to all who confess and forsake their sin, seeking His mercy and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. (Acts 3:19-21; Romans 10:9-10; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11) We believe that every person must be afforded compassion, love, kindness, respect, and dignity. (Mark 12:28-31; Luke 6:31) Hateful and harassing behavior or attitudes directed toward any individual are to be repudiated and are not in accord with Scripture nor the beliefs of Brookhaven Home Educators.

Final Authority for Matters of Belief and Conduct

The statement of purpose does not exhaust the extent of our beliefs. The Bible itself, as the inspired and infallible Word of God that speaks with final authority concerning truth, morality, and the proper conduct of mankind, is the sole and final source of all that we believe. For purposes of Brookhaven Home Educators’ practice and policy, our Father’s Board is our final interpretive authority on the Bible’s meaning and application.
