Announcing the 2017 Tucson Citywide Homeschool Spelling Bee, sponsored by CHET-SE!
When: Thursday, January 26, 2017
Where: East Tucson Baptist Church (9100 E. Speedway Blvd.)
The Citywide Homeschool Spelling Bee is open to all homeschoolers in Pima County who meet eligibility requirements:
*The Speller must NOT reach his/her 15th birthday on or before August 31, 2016.
*The Speller must NOT pass beyond 8th grade on or before February 1, 2017.
*Students who are enrolled in public virtual schools are not eligible.
*The speller must not have repeated any grade for the purpose of extending spelling bee eligibility.
*The speller-or the speller's parent, legal guardian, or school official acting on student's behalf- must not have declared to another entity an academic classification higher than eighth grade for any purpose, including high school graduation equivalency or proficiency examinations and/or examinations such as the PSAT, SAT, or ACT.
*Additional eligibility requirements are listed in the official spelling bee rules which will be emailed to each speller upon registration. Please review these rules to ensure that your child is eligible to participate.
The winner of the regular SPELLING BEE will advance to the Pima County Spelling Bee, held in February.
In addition to the Spelling Bee, there will also be a Honey Bee. This is for younger children who would like the experience of participating in a spelling bee, but don't want to compete with the "big kids." Children in 1st through 4th grade may participate in either the Honey Bee or the regular Spelling Bee. However, they cannot do both bees. The 1st and 2nd place winners of the Honey Bee will receive a prize, but will not advance to the Spelling Bee. Participants must be in at least the 1st grade.
All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.
Here is the schedule for the day:
8:30 Check-in for Honey Bee
8:45 Honey Bee begins
10:00 Check-in for Spelling Bee
10:30 Spelling Bee begins
There will be refreshments served between the bees, during the time of check-in for the regular Spelling Bee (10:00-10:20). When you register your child, please indicate if you can bring a snack for the refreshment table (cookies, salty snack, etc.) Water will be provided.
To help cover the expenses for the bee, there is a registration fee of $3.00 per child, with a family maximum of $6.00, to participate in the bee, payable at the door.
To REGISTER, go to the CHET-SE website and click on the Spelling Bee link. www.homeschool-life.com/ az/chetse. If your child is in 1st through 4th grade, you may register for either the Honey Bee or the Spelling Bee. 5th-8th graders must register for the Spelling Bee. When signing up you must indicate your child's age and grade. Also, please indicate if you are able to bring refreshments. When I receive your registration, I will email you a list of study words and a copy of the spelling bee rules.
The DEADLINE for registration is January 12th, 2017. I encourage you to register as soon as possible, though, so that your child can start studying the words!
