Canals. They were key to transporting goods to the interior of the US, as the use of wagons was difficult, slow and costly. Most of us are familiar with the Erie Canal in Northern New York connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes. But did you know there were canals crisscrossing PA as well? In fact, PA had the most canals ever built. And did you further know that we have a canal – with a tunnel – in our own back yard?

The Union Canal Tunnel, now owned and operated by the Lebanon County Historical Society, is the oldest existing transportation tunnel in the US. From 1827 to 1855 the Union Canal linked the commercial centers of Harrisburg, Reading, and by extension, the port of Philadelphia. The Union Canal Tunnel Park serves the tunnel and the only remaining 5/8 mile section of the original canal through Lebanon County.

Join us as we ride a boat through the tunnel and get a narrated tour, learning the history of the canal, its importance and, sadly, its demise. We won’t give it away, but we challenge you to discover – either by listening or asking questions – WHY the canals declined from popular use. Parents of small children should be prepared for approx. 45 minute slow moving boat ride, and going through the dark tunnel (they do have spotlights) with the possibility of water dripping from the ceiling – but don’t fear, it is pure water.

The park is open till dusk. Picnic tables and benches can be found throughout the park and there are trails located on either side of the canal. So come prepared to make a day of it, if you wish. If you choose to have lunch in the park, all litter and trash MUST be remove
