This field trip will be in 2 parts: the museum and the medicine program. You may choose to do EITHER the museum OR the COMBINATION of the museum PLUS the medicine program. (There is no option to attend just the program.) Only children 5 and under are FREE. We have offered this in 2 parts to allow younger (or sensitive) children to still attend the museum while skipping the medicine program. There is no age limit for the program but it IS geared towards middle school and older.

The Lutheran Seminary was founded in 1826 and used as a field hospital during, and after, the Civil War. We will spend an hour in the museum where an academically driven scavenger hunt will be available to help students interpret the exhibits as they move through the building.

The remainder of the time we will participate in a combination of two of their Civil War Programs: the Civil War Emergency Medicine program & the Mending the Wounded program. Through these programs we will follow a soldier from the time of his wounding through the field hospital, triage, surgery and recovery – including how patients coped with their wounds for the remainder of their lives. NOTE: the programs are designed for middle school and up.

Bring a bagged lunch and join us on their picnic grounds before we head across town (a 5 min drive) to the Jennie Wade House and the Shriver House. Or stop at a fast food place and meet up with us at Jennie Wade’s House.

NOTE: Parents of “littles” are welcome to continue browsing the museum or you may take them outside to the picnic grounds and let them play during the program part of our field trip.

This field trip is part of a “Build Your Own Gettysburg Tour." You can add the Shriver House and/or the Jennie Wade House (which are a 5 min drive away).

Covid info: The program will most likely be held outside so dress appropriately. Masks are required. In signing up for a HAHA field trip or class, you are agreeing to our covid waiver. The waiver is viewable on our homepage.
