FAQs

Q:

What is C.O.A.C.H.?

A:

About us:

We are a K-12 Christian home-school cooperative. We offer classes, which are held weekly during fall and winter terms, field trips, and group activities. As a cooperative, all parents are needed to be actively involved in co-teaching during classes and serving on a committee. Nursery and Preschool are provided during classes for siblings of K-12 students only, as a convenience and benefit to our C.O.A.C.H. families.

Our Mission:

The mission of COACH is to provide support and encouragement to home educators in northeast Michigan. COACH is a Christian group, though unaffiliated with any denomination or sect. As the Bible is the foundational authority for the Christian faith, the teaching and use of Holy Writ is encouraged in all class and activity settings.

Membership:

The qualification for membership in this organization is that the parent(s) and their child(ren) commit to participating actively and regularly in COACH-sponsored activities throughout the academic year as defined by the Board. Participation is to be characterized by cooperation, disciplined and respectful behavior, and attendance of at least one parent at COACH activities where at least one child from a home is present.

Membership in the organization is fee-based, requiring annual dues to offset costs, which shall be determined by the Board. Any class, course, activity or other function hosted or sponsored by COACH may require a fee for reasonable costs associated with such class, course, activity or other function.

Members of the organization shall have the right to one vote per family on matters submitted to a vote of the membership including election of officers.

Q:

How do I join your group?

A:

First read the F.A.Q. "What is C.O.A.C.H.?" If you decide that joining our co-op is something you'd like to do then please contact us at alpenacoach@gmail.com so we can add you to our general mailing list to receive information about upcoming meetings and registration dates.  When we are ready to register for classes we will ask you to use the request membership link on the upper right side of the homepage. Someone will be in contact with you as soon as possible.

Q:

Does becoming a member cost anything?

A:

There is no charge to be put on an email list to stay apprised of COACH meetings and registration dates, however joining the website or attending classes does have some cost.  There is a $50 registration charge per school year per family plus the cost of the classes that your family registers for.  Field trips are at cost according to what we are charged.  We try to keep activities at as low a cost as possible so that participating doesn't cause undue hardship or prevent people from joining due to financial constraints.

Q:

How does C.O.A.C.H. define Homeschooling?

A:

With the recent broadened use of the word "homeschooling" during the COVID pandemic, the C.O.A.C.H. board has established a definition of homeschooling for the use of our group that will attempt to align with Michigan law (380.1561 Compulsory attendance at public school; enrollment dates; exceptions.)

Homeschooling (for the purpose of C.O.A.C.H.) is defined as:

The parent is organizing and supplying core subject curriculum as defined by Michigan law (380.1561 3a or f), it is not being provided from a public-school entity, with the exception of those homeschooled until the point of dual enrollment in college classes.
