What is GCA

Grace Christian Academy is "The Best of Both Worlds."  We are a 2-day a week, hybrid school for homeschoolers. We provide a structured classroom experience focused on group activities, hands-on learning, and a Christ-focused world view. Our instructors provide structure, guidance, oversight, and accountability. We offer courses in science, writing, history and various social studies for students K-8. Classes take place on Mondays and Thursdays.

Mission & Philosophy

Mission: We are committed to supporting homeschooling families as we raise godly, productive children by providing both community and Christ-focused education assistance.

Philosophy: To provide a classroom experience that digs into the material through group study, activity based, hands-on learning, public speaking, and discussions that stimulate critical thinking.  All instruction is filtered through the lens of a Christ-centered and created universe and intended to promote personal responsibility and problem-solving. We want our students to "get it" not just "get through it".

GCA utilizes a variety of curricula to engage students.  Students rotate through several series including Mystery of History and Apologia Science. Other resources include Bible, My Father's World, Institute for Excellence in Writing "IEW" and various Social Studies publications. Here you will find samples and explanations of the various curriculum we use.

This is NOT the curriculum list for the current year!!

  ?

GCA Parents are reminded that they are responsible for ensuring proficiency in Math, Printing, and Reading. GCA will be reinforcing these subjects through a variety of in-class activities and curriculum including Quirkles and McRuffy Science, Aesop's Fables, Magic Treehouse, Dr. Seuss, Galloping the Globe and a variety of other resources.

The focus for Kindergarten and First grade is to introduce students to a range of subjects and instill a love of learning through hands-on activities that reinforce basic skills. Groundwork is laid here to prepare students for more concentrated learning in second grade. Topics covered generally include science, music, art, literature, history, and geography. Again, parents are responsible for making sure their children are proficient in math, reading, and printing. GCA tutors are responsible for reinforcing these areas within daily activities. Songs, memorization, words, rules, numbers, historical events, and dates can all be utilized to reinforce learning math, reading, and writing. Concepts to be covered in Kindergarten and First grade includes:

  • Bible stories – reading the bible, character lessons, attributes of God.

  • Calendar- days of the week, months, seasons, special holidays.

  • Numbers- skip counting, money, time.

  • Science – plants, animals, geology, chemistry, and weather.

  • Social Studies – maps, geography, world cultures, foods, and history.

  • Language Arts Elements – letters, sounds, blends, sight words, reading aloud.

  • Classroom Training – following rules, respecting others, obedience. Students must not talk over the tutor or others, they must raise their hand and wait to be called upon, they must not tease or criticize others, they should be taught about teamwork, getting in line and walk nicely, etc..

  • Public Presentation – show and tell, or my mom/dad is a “tell whatever their job is” types of sharing in front of their peers, book reports, favorite vacation etc…

  • Music/Art - An introduction to art basics, mediums and artists and lots of projects, while music covers various musicians, types of music, music theory, instruments and more.

  • Sing-alongs – patriotic and classic songs and nursery rhymes.

Second grade is a transitional year at GCA. Students will begin formal writing lessons, as and start learning to be responsible for completing small amounts of homework. They will study American history, science, and writing together. (Students will also receive instruction in music and art .

IEW Institute for Excellence in Writing  Bible Heroes:  Writing Lessons in Structure and Style, by Lori Verstegen

  • Science: by Dr. Wile, Science, in the Beginning, is used as the basis for Science. Students explore all aspects of the 7 days of creation from Astronomy to creepy crawly bugs, zoology and more.

IEW or Institute for Excellence in Writing, is at the root of GCA's language arts program. Other aspects of LA at GCA  include literature, public speaking and grammar.

2nd Grade - "Bible Heros"

3-6th Grade rotate through a series of themes including:  "All Things Fun and Fascinating", "Fables Myths and Fairy Tales", "Medieval History", "Ancient History" and "US History"

Teaching students to Listen. Speak. Read. Write. Think!  is the goal of IEW and GCA.  IEW teaches students how to become confident and competent communicators and thinkers. Using the four language arts—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—IEW methods have been proven to be effective for students of all ages and levels of ability. It teaches students to write well, to think clearly, and express themselves eloquently and persuasively.

Students learn how to

  • outline and summarize
  • generate cohesive paragraphs
  • create stories
  • produce reports and critiques
  • develop essays
  • translate their thoughts and ideas into writing
  • vary sentence structure
  • use interesting vocabulary
  • add literary devices
  • memorize poetry & other works
  • perform memorized pieces

Lower and upper elementary students have a separate science subject rotation. Young students are introduced to science subjects from biology to chemistry. A variety of resources are used to provide hands-on experiments and promote curiosity including Quirkels, My Father's World, and McRuffy Science.

Grades 3-middle school utilize curriculum published by Apologia, The Young Explorer Series. This Year students will study Botany by Fulbright.

Immersion in one scientific topic for an extended period of time gives students the opportunity to develop a love for the field and an appreciation for the intricacies and patterns God has embedded within it for us to discover. As with all subject areas, Science is taught from a Biblical perspective. Hands-on projects and experiments are incorporated in order to give concrete understanding.

Art and Music are given special attention on a daily basis through 2nd grade, and both are introduced through a variety of mediums. Each day students will devote time listening to classical music, learning about various composers, and studying famous artists and their work.

Art is pursued through hands-on crafts, projects, and paintings.  They also use art as a means of digging deeper into history and culture. In a previous year, students made clay soldiers while studying the Terracotta Army of China.

GCA utilizes The Mystery of History, by Bright Ideas Press "MOH" to provide a three-year rotational study of history and geography. MOH is a Biblically based worldview from creation to modern times that creates a full and robust picture of the world during Bible times up to the modern day.  Notes, timelines, hands-on projects, map skills, crafts, and other projects make this comprehensive program engaging and fun.

History and geography are incorporated into lower elementary grades through Galloping the Globe, My Father's World, and various American History resources. The goal is to introduce lower elementary students to different places, people, their foods, and cultures through history and geography.

GCA's 7th8th-grade classes rotate various subjects depending upon students abilities and enrollment.  Some of the subjects in our rotation include:

  • U.S. History
  • Texas History
  • General Science
  • Physical Science
  • Biology
  • Pre-Algebra
  • Algebra 1
  • Math Lab
  • English

Multi-Studies is a class used to explore electives and various topics in addition to GCA's regular curriculum.  This class takes the place of music and art for the older students.  Full courses or unit studies may be used to introduce students to Social Studies, Civics, Geography, Poetry, Math Lab, Latin, Etiquette, and various other topics.

Math courses may be offered beginning in 7th grade instead of multi-studies:

Math Lab - Students bring their own curriculum. They'll work on their individual curriculum during Math Lab while a teacher oversees the class and is available to assist when necessary.

If enough students are at a similar skill level Pre-Algebra or Algebra may be offered.
