A word from your new board...

Coordinator:
As we prepare for next school year, we are in search for good curriculum, books, and supplies…but what is it that will keep us going, strengthen us when we are exhausted, and give us hope when circumstances seem hopeless?  Let me encourage you to spend time in God’s Word.  When He speaks encouragement, promises, and blessings to you through His Word, copy them down and cover your home with them.  Share them with each other throughout the year!  Here are just a few that encourage me.

Philippians 4:6-7  Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God: and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Colossians 3:23  Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.

Psalm 46 (Please read on your own)

What a blessing it is to serve as your coordinator for 2013-2014

Asst. Coordinator:

Hello everyone! I am Shelby Gardner. I will be serving in the position of Assistant Coordinator on the SAFE board for the next school year. I am so happy to be able to serve with this great board! I think it's going to be a productive and fun year!

Just a few things about me:  I have been married to my very best friend, Michael, for 17 years this August (I can hardly believe that)!  Time flies when you're having fun. ;)   We have two wonderful children, Lyndi, who is 16 and going into her junior year in high school, and Jake, who is 10 and going into the 5th grade. I have to mention our black lab, Darcy, (she would pout if I didn't) and our newly acquired bunny, Ellie. This will be our 5th year home-schooling. We absolutely love it! We are members at Crosspoint Baptist Church and are very active there! We love our church family!

I hope in this next year that we remember this truth that comes from God's Word:

Colossians 3:23-24 "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ."

Secretary/Treasurer

My name is Lisa Burchett Elliott and I just completed my 9th year homeschooling.  I have two sweet daughters – Rachel, 14 and Emma, 9.   We attend Bethesda Church of God where we are heavily involved in music ministry…all of us! ?  I am really excited about the opportunity to serve on the SAFE board this year; being more plugged in with our homeschooling community and having some new friends!

Club Day Coordinator:

Hello, my name is Sara Ice.  I am your new Club Day Coordinator.  I have been married for 18 years.  My husband has been in the Army for 16 years and we have three children, ages 11, 7, and 4.  I have been homeschooling for 6 years now.  I'm excited about our upcoming year!  But I need you.  Please consider and pray about how you can be involved in Club Day this coming fall.  To those who are new in the group, Club Day is a SAFE sponsored event where we gather to help each other provide instruction for our children.  Classes for all age groups and subjects are encouraged and welcomed!

Thank you, Anna Maggard, for already agreeing to provide math classes again!  I will be teaching Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology - study of the movement of the body.  We will be starting classes in late August.  If you are interested in teaching a class, I need a class syllabus by July 9th so it can be approved by the SAFE Board.

If you have any concerns or questions, you may contact me at:
520-226-1254 or by email: sara.theices@gmail.com

Announcements - IMPORTANT - please read:

 * For the past 10+ years, membership dues have remained at $25.  However, we have seen a need to increase membership dues to $30 in order to maintain the support SAFE provides to our families.  We are thankful that membership in such a tremendous support group continues to be affordable.   Please make plans now for the small adjustment.

Also, please remember to pay your SAFE membership dues by the August 1st deadline.

SAFE By-Laws, Article V - Dues, Section 2 states:  "Dues are to be paid by August 1, unless special arrangements are made with the Secretary/Treasurer.  Those who do not meet these requirements shall not be entitled to the services of SAFE."

The Secretary/Treasurer, Lisa Elliott, has given permission to waive the $5 late fee if dues are paid by/at the August 13th membership meeting.  Attached is the membership renewal form:  mail checks to Lisa Elliott @ 2995 S. Wise Dr.  Sumter, SC 29150

 * Most of you are aware that SAFE now has a new website.  It is an INCREDIBLE tool that is sure to enhance our membership support, communication and involvement as we learn together how to use it.  Because we desire to see unity within our SAFE group, the current Board, along with the recommendation from your previous Board, has voted to require every SAFE family to register for the website in order to complete their enrollment in Sumter Area Family Educators.  Please take some time this summer to signup and explore the website so that you can become familiar with it before the school year starts.  Even those of us who are not computer savvy will like what we find.

Classical Conversations

What is it?

Classical Conversations (CC) is a community of homeschool families who come together once a week to educate their children using the classical method. The children are under the instruction of a trained tutor. CC helps train and equip parents to provide their children a Christian, classical education.

We have Foundations classes for ages K4-6th from 9-12, community lunch from 12-1, and Essentials classes for 4th-6th graders from 1-3. In Foundations, the students are introduced weekly to grammar, history, science, Latin, geography and timeline.  They participate in an art project and science experiment each week.  They also do a presentation before their peers each week.   In Essentials, students learn grammar charts and diagramming as well as learning IEW writing skills and writing papers each week to read before their peers.

This year we are excited to be adding a Challenge A class for middle schoolers.   We also have Challenge 2 for high schoolers.

All classes will meet on Mondays at Harmony Church starting fall 2013.

If you are interested in finding out more about any of these programs, feel free to call or email with any questions.  We are currently holding registration for new students.  Our program begins mid-August for middle school and high school students and September for K4-6th.  Foundations/Essentials is 12 weeks in the fall and 12 weeks in the spring.  Challenge classes are 15 weeks in the fall and 15 weeks in the spring.
