HOMESCHOOL FAMILY SCIENCE DAYS

AMAZING ANIMALS!

 Tue, Jan 7 at 10am

Travel through the museum and explore amazing adaptations that help animals survive! You can solve an animal mystery and learn about Nature’s Extremes in a museum educator led auditorium presentation.

Lobby, Level 1 from 10AM-1PM

CSI: Wildlife – We need your help to solve a mystery! Lucky for us, the suspect left some clues behind. Can you examine the evidence and help us determine the animal culprit?

  • Fur – Compare fur samples to determine who may have been at the scene.
  • Tracks – Tracks were also found at the scene. Can you determine which animal it was?
  • Scat – Everybody poops! I wonder what we can learn from the culprit’s scat.
  • Skull – By examining an animal’s teeth, information from their diet can be determined. Can we exclude any suspects by learning about their diet?

Lower Level, Level 2-4 from 10AM-1PM

  • Who Eats Who? – Learn about Food Chains and Food Webs with this fun game.
  • Animal Camouflage – Camouflage is the art of not being seen, this is something both predators and prey take advantage of. Can you find everyone?
  • Opposable Thumbs – The thumb is opposable, in that it is the only digit on the human hand which is able to oppose or turn back against the other four fingers. Stop by this station to try a challenge and to learn about how opposable thumbs help some animals survive.
  • Life Cycles – A life cycle refers to the series of changes an organism goes through during its lifetime. Some animals have simple life cycles while others undergo major changes!

Auditorium, Lower Level at 10:30AM and 11:30AM
Nature’s Extremes - From the dark ocean depths to the icy arctic, join us for an interactive, educator-led exploration of life at the extremes and the adaptations that wildlife in these and other extreme environments have evolved to help them survive. Along the way, your class will learn about tiny tardigrades, gigantic squids, and many more extreme animals!
