PSEO Spring Course Descriptions


PSEO Communication Courses

Public Communication - COM 1515 - 3 credits (Crown College)

Instructor: Cristen Schmalz

Prerequisite: none

Course Type: One semester online course offered spring semester only. Students from WEST can take classes in a hybrid format in which they meet for an hour and a half face-to-face with a qualified course selected by WEST and approved by Crown. The rest of the weekly activities for classes are online, led by one of Crown’s online faculty members. This option gives students the opportunity to get support from a familiar homeschool course assistant while taking a high quality online course under the guidance of a credentialed faculty member from Crown. The courses have a low student to instructor ratio and are offered in a 15 week format. All PSEO students are supported by a dedicated PSEO academic advisor.

Course Description: This course provides the student with an introduction to the theory of the communication process. Topics include analyzing a target audience, organizing material, preparing an effective method of delivery, and developing informative and persuasive speeches. Each student will deliver speeches that are video taped and evaluated.

PSEO Critical Thinking Courses

Visions of the Good: Ethics & Worldview - CT 213.PW01 - 3 credits (North Central University)

Prerequisite: None

Course Type: This class has both online and face-to-face components. This hybrid format course has the same NCU faculty member meeting with the WEST students face-to-face that teaches the online components. WEST PSEO courses have a low student to instructor ratio and are offered in a 15 week format. All PSEO students are supported by a dedicated PSEO academic advisor.

Course Description: Designed to develop an ability to identify and critique the basic criteria of various ethical systems, the course surveys the major schools of ethical theory, examines the writings of significant theorists and applies this knowledge to current ethical problems.

Students need reliable internet access to complete the coursework.

Introduction to Literary Analysis - ENG 1512 - 3 credits (Crown College)

Course Type: One semester course offered spring semester only. Course Description: Continued instruction and practice in writing and the writing process are the focal points of this course, with emphasis on critical analysis of literary genres.

Art Appreciation - FAR 1560 - 3 credits (Crown College)

Course Description: An introductory study of art appreciation that examines significant art and artists associated with major art movements with a special emphasis on historic and contemporary art reflecting Christian beliefs. Content and knowledge emerge from the study of the elements and principles of art to acquire a vocabulary and understanding of the meaning and purpose of visual imagery and an overview of the development of art throughout history to the present.

PSEO Foreign Language Courses

American Sign Language II - MLAN 240.PW01 - 4 credits (North Central University)

Prerequisites: MLAN 140

Course Type: One-semester course offered spring semester only. This class has both online and face-to-face components. This hybrid format course has the same NCU faculty member meeting with the WEST students face-to-face that teaches the online components. Course Description: This course is a continuation of American Sign Language I. Students will learn the conversational and cultural behaviors necessary to carry on a natural entry-level conversation. Deaf culture will also be presented to provide students with a broad picture of language and culture. Additional topics addressed are: Behavioral rules of Deaf community, receptive/expressive skills, sign vocabulary, and grammar/structure. [Each class has a lab and community based component].

Spanish II - LAN 246 - 4 credits (Crown College)

Prerequisites: Spanish 1 or instructor's permission

Course Type: Spring Semester only. Course Description: First year Spanish courses introduce the student to the sounds and structures of the Spanish language through listening,speaking, reading, and writing; this will provide the ability to communicate and understand Spanish in an elementary manner. The courses also establish a language basis for the study of Spanish and Latin American literature. Class size limited. Preference given to students taking both semesters. Others enroll with consent of the instructor.

Course Description: This course focuses on health in various aspects of life including physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational, social and financial health. Students will learn basic principles of health in each of these areas and be encouraged to apply these principles to their own lives.

Topics in US History - HIS 2520 - 3 credits (Crown College)

Course Description: This course will examine political, social, economic, and international dimensions of the history of the United States. It aims to stimulate both an analytical and a moral understanding of critical issues from the nation's past.

College Algebra 1 - MATH 125.PW01 - 3 credits - NCU

Class Type: Fall Semester only. This class has both online and face-to-face components. This hybrid format course has the same NCU faculty member meeting with the WEST students face-to-face that teaches the online components. WEST PSEO courses have a low student to instructor ratio and are offered in a 15 week format. All PSEO students are supported by a dedicated PSEO academic advisor.

Course Description: This course studies basic ideas and concepts in algebra and geometry necessary to understand statement problems, statistics, and the basic laws of science. Topics include the real number system, exponents and polynomials, linear equations, inequalities, factoring, rational expressions, radical expressions, and quadratic equations.

Liberal Arts Math - MATH 115.PW01 - 3 credits - NCU

Prerequisite: None. Students scoring under 18 on the math section of the ACT or under 420 on the SAT must take MATH 115; students scoring an ACT Math of 18 or higher may also take this course.

Course Type: One-semester course offered spring semester only. This class has both online and face-to-face components. Course Description: This non-technical survey course emphasizes the ideas and concepts of mathematics. The course is intended for students who may prefer a more practical alternative to traditional math courses. Topics include algebra, number theory, set theory, problem-solving, statistics, probability, finances and geometry.

Statistics - MATH 260.PW01 - 3 credits (NCU) (not scheduled 2022/2023)

Prerequisite: College Algebra I or equivalent high school algebra experience

Course Type: This class has both online and face-to-face components. This hybrid format course has the same NCU faculty member meeting with the WEST students face-to-face that teaches the online components. WEST PSEO courses have a low student to instructor ratio and are offered in a 15 week format. All PSEO students are supported by a dedicated PSEO academic advisor.

Course Description: This statistics course includes a study in descriptive and inferential statistics, emphasizing measures of central tendency, probability, correlation and non-parametric statistics essential for research and interpreting professional studies. The primary goal of the course is to help students understand how the process of posing a question, collecting data relevant to that question, analyzing data, and interpreting data can help them find answers to real problems from their world.

Students need reliable internet access to complete the coursework. Students also should have a graphing calculator. A TI-83 or TI-84 is recommended, but not required.
