FAQs

Q:

How often do you meet?

A:

We meet one morning a week for 18 weeks during the school year:  We also have a few parties and a few field trips throughout the year.

Q:

How much does it cost?

A:

$15 per family plus $5 per child 3 and up.  A few classes may have an additional supply fee or required textbook.

Q:

Do you have classes for high school students?

A:

We currently have a few high school students and are offering classes based on their needs.  Since we only have 18 weeks of classes we cannot offer courses that earn complete credits.  Rather, we offer supplemental experiences to help students meet those credit requirements.  For example, we offer Apologia Science.  Each year, the teacher will give a flexible schedule of assignments to be completed at home.  At co-op the students will engage in discussion and complete lab experiments.  The co-op teacher simply helps the students be accountable to the work at hand.  We will be doing biology for the 2019-20 school year.  The class will focus on dissection and microbiology lab experiments typical of high school work.  Students will need to complete the biology textbook at home in order to earn a complete biology credit.  We will also offer classes such as literature study and foreign language conversation.  These are simple classes which will expand on work being done at home.

Q:

Does my child have to stay for the whole morning or can we choose specific classes?

A:

One of our goals is to develop deeper relationships.  That happens best by spending time together and sharing experiences.  If you choose to join our co-op you are choosing to spend the morning with us.  One exception may be if your family has a high school student.  Since we currently do not offer high school level classes he/she may come with you to co-op with their own course work but may choose to take one or two of our middle school level classes if it fits their interests.

Q:

What involvement is expected of the parent(s)?

A:

We are a low-cost, high involvement co-op.  EVERY mom is expected to teach or help thoughout the co-op morning.  We will work with you to find a place where you can serve and use your gifts and talents.  We also welcome dads to teach!  Often they will share their profession with the students but it could be a hobby or interest.  In these cases, we let the dads come simply for the block they are teaching.

Q:

Do you have parent support events like monthly meetings, mom's night out, or homeschool workshops?

A:

Although our moms sometimes get together for coffee or park days, most of our time and efforts go into our co-op classes.  For families who desire greater community support and events they join (sometimes in addition to our co-op) the New River Valley Christian Home Educators (NRVCHE).  You can find their contact information through our Community Resources page.

Q:

Can I join more than one co-op?

A:

Again, we are a low cost, high involvement co-op; therefore, we require every mom to teach or help in a significant way.  If you feel you can meet this requirement AND the requirements of another co-op at the same time then you are welcome to do so.  We recommend that you prayerfully consider your family's time and needs.
