Winter Classes

[2/16-3/22]

Elementary

9AM Nancy Drew Detectives -- We will be collaboratively playing a game called Treasure in the Royal Tower together!  While snowed-in at the Wickford Castle Ski Resort you, as Nancy Drew, are trapped in a place that’s as strange as its history. The castle is a riddle, full of dead-ends and detours that hint at a legend left behind by Marie Antoinette! Solve baffling puzzles, search concealed rooms, interview evasive suspects, and sidestep danger on the hunt for a secret that the doomed queen was desperate to hide!

10AM Spring Celebrations Around the World -- Have you ever wondered how people around the world celebrate the coming spring each year? Join me as we explore together! This class will be a mix of learning about different cultures, folklore, geography, history, and, my favorite, crafts! We will probably touch briefly on religion depending on the celebration.

11AM Drawing Dragons -- In this class, students will learn how to draw assorted Wings of Fire dragons from the book Official Wings of Fire How to Draw!  While it is open to all ages so skilled young artists have the opportunity to participate, it is not a beginner-level class. This is an intermediate-level drawing course. (All ages)

Secondary

9AM The Lightning Thief: Mythology and Literature -- In this class we will be exploring both creative writing and mythology through the first book in the best selling Percy Jackson series "The Lightning Thief". Students will read the weeks chapters independently, then we will further discuss the writing and material in class. Topics covered include but are not limited to...the 12 Olympian gods, character collage and traits, the RAFT method, the ancient greek alphabet, and much much more. (10yo+)

10AM The Time Class -- In this class we will focus on time -- something we usually take for granted every day. We'll look closely at ideas of what time is and how it feels. We'll look at the tools we've made to track and use time to survive, to learn, and to create! Along the way we'll see demonstrations and complete some simple projects and thought experiments to help us understand something that is full of surprises. This is a topic with more questions than answers, which makes a lot of room for creative thinking and new ideas! (12yo+)

11AM 911 Operator -- In this class we will be collaboratively playing a game called 911 Operator. We will be dealing with emergency situations and managing emergency services in any city in the world, including right here in Buffalo! We will take calls and dispatch rescue forces; handle difficult situations, depending on the weather, and traffic. Help the citizens through cataclysms and natural disasters, becoming better emergency number operators every class. (12yo+)

Spring Classes

[4/12-5/17]

Elementary

9AM Banned Books: Melissa by Alex Gino -- In this class, we will learn about banned and challenged books using data from the American Library Association and briefly visit what that means concerning freedom of education and the rights endowed by the Constitution. We will then be reading and discussing one of the most frequently banned books in the US, Melissa by Alex Gino. (UE/MS)

10AM Pony Club: The World of Horses & Ponies -- Are you a horse lover? Join us as we explore various equestrian related topics ranging from history to breeds to care!

11AM Oyumaru: Thermoplastic Projects -- Come explore the many possibilities of oyumaru, a reusable, nontoxic thermoplastic modeling/crafting material from Japan! Oyumaru is translucent, flexible, and shiny, and it can be used over and over by softening in hot water! It's great for sculpting, mold-making, crafting accessories and decor, trinkets, toys, fidgets, and more! We will try many different projects, starting with fresh new batches of oyumaru each week. At the end of class, you can recycle the oyumaru to make brand new projects! (All ages)

Secondary

9AM Beginner Crochet -- Students will learn basic crochet stitches, terminology, how to read patterns and charts. They will be completing several small projects to practice their new skills as well. (12yo+)

10AM Desserts & Yum! -- Join us for this fun class of baking yummy desserts with a couple lunches added in! (12yo+)

11AM Two Thumbs Up: Film Criticism & Movie Making -- Each week we'll watch and discuss a different genre of film.  As we learn about the different genres and critique movies, students will be tasked with writing, and filming, a trailer for their own movie based on one of the genres we discussed.  We will watch everybody's trailers in the last class! (12yo+)
