Mrs. Sarah Schilens
My name is Sarah Schilens and I am a blessed wife, mother, homeschool teacher, and language teacher. I moved to Florida in 2000 and met my husband Eric. My husband is an engineer and we have two daughters. We began homeschooling 8 years ago and love learning together. I graduated from USF in 2003 with a Master’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Spanish and have continued my education with courses at PHSC and SPC.
Before homeschooling my two girls, I enjoyed learning ASL and basic French. I fell in love with the Spanish language in high school. Later I taught at Richey Elementary School for 9 years, some of which included Spanish instruction on their Spanish multi-age team. I have traveled to Spain, France, Tunisia, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic. My Mexico trip included learning Spanish, cultural immersion, and teaching English to Mexican students. My Dominican Republic trip was with the Diocese of Orlando. I enjoyed getting to know the family I stayed with, the locals, and helping build a school in the mountains while I was there. After returning to the U.S., I met a friend from Korea and dived into learning a bit of her language. This renewed my interest in Japanese as well. Lifelong learning is fun!
I believe that learning a second language teaches you about a new culture, but also teaches you more about your native language and culture. I have taught Spanish with GGM for 5 years and ASL for the past 2 years. I invite you to join my passion for languages in ASL and Spanish with other World Languages included this fall! Adults welcome, too! ¡Nos vemos!
