CHESS Parent Forums – February 11
Back 2 the Basics
In our ever changing society the challenges for homeschool families continues to mount almost on a daily basis. We seem to be asked to change our point of view and standards in order to help our children and others. Based on this we would like to invite all homeschool families and potential homeschool families to participate in a series of panel discussions to help us focus on the fundamentals.
We will have three Parent Forums that will help us get "Back to the Basics" from January to March 2016. Each forum will build on the previous but will be informative individually as well so please feel free to come when your schedule allows.
February 11 - Topic is Family and Why we Homeschool - we will have a panel discussion of homeschool parents from various backgrounds and levels of involvement in CHESS. This is a broad topic but should stimulate some great ideas for us to keep our eyes on the target.
March 10 - Topic is Influence on our Community - The next ring of the Target, but certainly not the last, is how we can influence and contribute to the great society around our families. There are so many opportunities that this could be a series alone but we will focus on ideas and experiences from a group of homeschool families that truly make a difference through service and involvement.
The above forums are taking place at West Lansing Church of Christ at 7 p.m. on January 14, February 11, and March 10. Childcare will be available. Donations are appreciated. For those of you who will be bringing children, please RSVP to Kim Winter. We look forward to seeing you there!
CHESS Science Fair
Contact: Kim Sutter
It's that time of year! Our Science Fair will be at the West Lansing Church of Christ Thursday at April 17 at 6:00pm. We have made some changes this year based on some excellent feedback from last year! Rather than having our judges evaluate the "non-judged" categories, we will have parent "evaluaters" for those instead, this way all the students can get the time and feedback their hard work deserves. This does mean we will need help in the following areas:
- Judges (this could be parents but not those with participants)
- Help with set up and tear down
- Help with check-in
- Photographer (no experience needed)
If you are willing to volunteer in any of these areas, please let me know. Although we are still waiting for final confirmation, it sounds like we will be having the MSU Science Theater putting on some more great experiments for us this year. This is open to ALL homeschoolers. It is NOT limited to CHESS members.
Forms are up on the CHESS website under forms. Registrations are due by Thursday, February 25th. It is important these get turned in in a timely fashion so we can keep everything running smoothly.
Please let me know if you are willing to volunteer in any of these areas.
2016 Mid-Michigan Graduation
Contact: Miriam Woods
The Mid-Michigan Home School Graduation is sponsored by Christian Home Educators Support System (CHESS). Even though this is sponsored by CHESS, you do not have to be a CHESS member to participate. Graduation is open to any homeschool senior in Mid-Michigan who has met their parents' requirements for high school graduation. This year's graduation will take place on Friday evening, May 13, 2016.
Why should you consider Mid-Michigan Home School Graduation for your senior? We believe it will provide an opportunity for your senior to graduate in a group setting, while, at the same time, reflecting the uniqueness of your individual home school ("Different homes, different schools, ... ONE LORD"). This ceremony will be an opportunity to bring honor and dignity to each of the graduates, but most importantly to glorify the Lord and thank Him for his faithfulness. It will be made up of group elements representing unity (such as a class verse and class motto/quote) and individual elements (student speeches given by a few) reflecting each student's unique personality.
Every family is an individual home school granting a diploma to their student for completing their requirements for graduation (diplomas are not awarded by or through CHESS). Parents of the graduate will personally present the diploma to their graduate. Each family or graduate will have an opportunity to share part of their schooling years, accomplishments, talents, personal blessings, etc., along with their future plans. As a group, the graduates will represent the Mid-Michigan homeschool community to their friends and family who are present.
There will be another meeting on February 18 at WLCC and one on April 28. If you missed the first meeting but would like to participate, please email Miriam Woods.
