WRITING:

  1. Nursery

Loving care for infants through toddlers.

  1. PreK-K - Learning Through Literature - class limit 9 students

A curriculum-free approach to exposing your children to wonderful picture books, allowing extension into poetry, geography, history, art, and bible. The children will develop language skills through narration, recitation, dictation, copy work and phonics. The year will consist of ten classic picture books that will be covered over a three-week span. You may choose to purchase these books, check them out from the library, or listen to them on YouTube. Each class period will begin with a reading of the book, followed by lessons/activities that enhance the story and ending with a related book. At the end of three weeks, your child will come home with a full lap-book containing their work for that story that can be shared at home with family and added to if wanted.

This gentle beginning to Learning through Literature will spark your little one’s interest in the joy of learning through wonderful picture books. They will be introduced to 10 books over the year, being allowed to re-tell or act out the story with small manipulatives. Their class time will start with the story followed by three short centers where they will work on fine motor skills via cutting, tracing or shaping play dough into letters; role play of the story; and finally an art project that will go along with their book. The end of class will allow time to hear a go-along book and singing.

Class fee: $30

  1. 1st-3rd - Learning Through Literature - class limit 12 students

It’s important at this age for the children to be listening to wonderful stories and being allowed to narrate these in their own words. Our work in the classroom will include everything listed above, except for dictation. At home, you may need to incorporate a phonics program. I personally used Phonics Pathways by Dolores Hiskes. Other notable programs/books are Explode the Code and All About Reading. It’s common for children this age to not be writing all their letters/numbers correctly. This is the time to have them do only 5 minutes a day of copy work, with you guiding them in correct letter/number formation.

Class fee: $30

  1. 2nd-4th - Just Write 1 - class limit 12 students

Just Write - Book 1 helps students become confident and expressive writers through fun exercises, engaging text and kid-friendly examples. Detailed models are included throughout, giving kids a helpful guide for each new skill. Book 1 presents the elements of creative writing, such as brainstorming, characters, topic, sequencing, story planning and more. Students will eventually progress to writing their own paragraphs and finally "publishing" their own story.

In addition to creative writing prompts which allow your student to grow as a writer, we will add grammar identification skills to help your student understand their writing skills. At the end of the year, we will comprise a book of their writing to highlight their writing fun and growth!

This class is intended for the budding or hesitant writer grades 2-4.

This class will require the purchase of Just Write - Book 1 (Homeschool Edition). This product can be ordered at Christianbook.com and Amazon.com. See the link below for purchase.

  1. 4th-6th - IEW Con’t A - Class size limit 15

Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW): Students will learn the structure and style of excellent writing. Using an incremental approach, this program teaches not just what to write, but how to write by providing the student with practical writing tools, which can be used for constructing a variety of written works. Between co-op meetings, students will have writing assignments to complete at home.

IEW Co-op Class Descriptions: There is an intentional overlap of grade levels to allow for the natural variance among children in writing readiness. Please place your child in a level best suited for him and one that will promote success in writing. All students new to IEW materials must enroll in an introductory course (not a continuation course). If your child has taken an IEW introductory course, he may not need to repeat another introductory course at a higher level; you may choose to register your child for the continuation courses instead. On the other hand, if your child needs more time practicing the basics of the program, consider enrolling him in a second introductory course.

4th – 6th Level A Continuation Course: For the student who has completed Level A Introduction or knows the basics of the IEW program, this course picks up where Level A Intro leaves off and advances writing strength. Class will also use IEW Fix It! Grammar Book, Level 2 --The Country Mouse, Town Mouse.

Class fee: $5

This later elementary class incorporates everything above but expands the work intervals, vocabulary, length of stories, as well as encouraging brief written narrations of the stories heard. Recitation of a poem or bible verse will occur on the last day each book is covered. (Recitation does not mean they have to memorize it, simply recite it fluently while reading.) Parents should continue to include a phonics program of their choice at home, if necessary, as well as a 10-minute daily copy work time and a weekly dictation of a short piece from their literature. This will be explained in detail at the beginning of class.

  1. look forward to guiding your children throughout the year with some wonderful books that will hopefully foster their love of reading and writing.

  1. 7th & up - Lost Tools of Writing

This composition class will work best for students who already have a

relatively solid understanding of grammar and sentence structure, have some writing experience, and are willing to think for themselves. This class will teach both writing and logic. For writing we will cover thesis, proofs, arguments, conclusion, editing, exordium, amplification, division, refutation, narratio, schemes, and tropes. To expand our logic we will master comparison, definition, circumstance, relationships, testimony, and sorting.

We will be writing nine essays, ranging from three to ten paragraphs, spending three weeks on each. The first week we will focus on discovery, providing tools to generate ideas then using logic to select the highest quality (similar to IEW’s KWO but more detailed). Then the art of selecting, sorting, and outlining ideas and subject matter to draft an essay will be covered in week two. During week three we will be editing our papers for clarity and appropriate expression (similar to IEW’s dress ups). We will be covering parallelism with words, phrases, and clauses along with verbs, antithesis, simile, alliteration, metaphor, and assonance. Each essay will have a checklist for students to verify all required elements are included. Students will be receiving feedback on their work.

We will be using The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis and The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry as examples in class so students should be familiar with these stories. It is suggested they read/listen to them before we start class in September. Students will be able to select their own story for each of their essays or may use one of the suggested books.

  1. 10th & up - Forensic Science - class limit 10 students

The term “forensic science” refers to the acquisition of knowledge gained from the evidence, analysis, and investigator interpretations with the goal of presenting this knowledge before individuals in the judicial system. Intro to Forensic Science from a Biblical Worldview homeschool curriculum was developed to teach your students how to use keen observational techniques, understand the disciplines that make up forensic science, and know how to apply them to seeking first the Kingdom of God. In every lesson, applicable Scripture is woven throughout the text, along with practical labs, and review materials. Case studies are included to raise the student’s awareness of some of the most famous crimes in history, both solved and unsolved, while examining real investigative practices, time frames, and judicial results. Master Books’ Intro to Forensic Science from a Biblical Worldview reveals God as the Author and Designer of science and the need for Christian investigators reporting to the judicial system. Because of the sensitive nature of the case studies, this course is recommended for mature students.

Content Warning: This course deals with real criminal case studies and discusses sensitive topics. Parental discretion is advised.

Families will need to purchase both a teacher guide (which includes the student worksheets) and the student book. https://www.masterbooks.com/intro-to-forensic-science-set

A $20 per student class fee will be collected at the beginning of the year.
