FAQs

Q:

Where does your group meet and how often?

A:

SHINE meets at Fairview Baptist Church on Wednesdays and we meet for 24 SHINE Wednesdays.  We also have field trips and other social activites through out the year at other locations.

Q:

How many families/children are in your group and what ages are included?

A:

SHINE generally is made up of around 35-40 families/with around 100 children. The numbers can slightly vary depending on the year but we generally are full but take in a couple new families every year as some families graduate from homeschooling or their homeschooling needs change.

Our SHINE family is made up of all ages of children but we have classes for children ages 4- 18. To join, a family must have at least one child who is 5 or who will turn 5 on or before September 1st of the current year. Our age groups are divided into ages 4-7, 8-11, and 12 and up. Our average class size ranges from 5- 15 children. The number of children in each age group can vary from year to year depending on the make up of the families in the group at the time. We have families with only one child and families with many children. All are welcome!

Q:

What is the parent commitment or involvement in SHINE?

A:

SHINE is a community of homeschool families who work together to provide both enrichment and academic classes for our children on Wednesdays.  As a parent, you are not required to teach, however, we are a support group so we do ask our parents to volunteer and serve in some capacity. Our parents teach classes, assist in classes, help plan social activities, and help with set up and clean up. Our SHINE family works together to make SHINE great! SHINE is not a school or a drop-off co-op and is designed to enrich your homeschooling NOT replace your homeschooling at home.

Q:

What type of families are accepted for membership of SHINE?

A:

SHINE is a Christian homeschool support group and our members are Christians. Our families are made up of beautiful diverse people who have different backgrounds but we all believe Jesus is Lord and Savior. Approval of all SHINE families is contingent on a family meeting all membership requirements which includes the agreement to our Statement of Faith and to abide by all SHINE policies. We ask that all our members will be encouraging and accepting of one another.

Q:

Does SHINE accept Epic or other school funds?

A:

We are not able to accept Epic or any other school funds.

Q:

Will SHINE meet all my education needs for my child(ren) and replace school and does SHINE issue grades or academic transcripts?

A:

No, SHINE cannot possibly meet all your children's educational needs.  SHINE is a support group made up of families that encourage and support one another while homeschooling their children. We have enrichment and some academic classes to support your homeschooling adventure but we believe the ultimate responsibility for the education of children belongs to parents (Deuteronomy 4-9; 6:1-25; 4:1-4).

With respect to the home school laws of Oklahoma, individual home-schooling families will govern themselves with respect to curriculum, record keeping, school calendar, and education method. We believe parents (under God) to be the best judges when raising and educating their own children, and while SHINE will offer support, encouragement, and home school training, it is up to individual families to decide what is best for their children. SHINE DOES NOT AWARD ACADEMIC CREDIT, KEEP ACADEMIC RECORDS, NOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR FULFILLING ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS TO MEET OKLAHOMA HOMESCHOOL LAW
