Q:

Is KINDRED Homeschool Collective (KHC) a school?

A:

KHC is NOT a school. As a home educator, you are responsible directly to the state of Virginia for meeting your family’s homeschool requirements. 

Q:

When does KHC meet? And what ages are eligible to enroll?

A:

KHC meets on Thursdays from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm from August to May at New Life Church in the Ghent area of Norfolk.  We offer classes for preschool through grade 12 and a nursery for children ages 2 and younger. 

Q:

What is the difference between the KHC registration fee and the class supply fees?

A:

The registration fee is paid directly to KHC and covers the administrative cost of the co-op, including rent, insurance, criminal background checks, administrative supplies, etc. The class supply fee is paid directly to the teacher and covers the cost for supplies needed for your student to participate in the class.

Q:

Are there late fees if I miss a deadline?

A:

Yes. Your timely payments help us keep KHC’s financial responsibilities. For this reason, we encourage thoughtful planning and budgeting to ensure your KHC payments are on time. Please include a late fee of $10 for payments received after the 5th of the month. 

Q:

How much is tuition?

A:

There is no tuition at KHC. As stated before, we are a co-op in the truest sense of the word. KHC runs on our collective contributions, not money. 

 

Q:

Why are we requiring background checks? And who pays for them?

A:

 At KHC we aim to provide a safe environment for all children. It is therefore important for us to know the criminal history of every adult that will be participating in KHC. In addition, our insurance provider requires a criminal background check for each participating adult. The cost for the background check is included in the registration fee.

Q:

I‘m a busy homeschool parent. Is this a drop-off program?

A:

KHC is not a drop-off program.  We expect that a parent will remain in the building while the student is in attendance. If a parent or guardian cannot attend KHC with their student, then an adult must be designated to attend KHC with the student. 

 

Q:

Is there a dress code?

A:

KHC does not have a dress code.  We trust that parents are the best judge of what is appropriate and inappropriate attire for themselves and their children. In this regard, please keep in mind that KHC meets in a church, and we want to be respectful of this house of worship.

Q:

What if my kid is sick? What if I’m sick?

A:

Children or adults that have been sick (fever of 100.4 or above, diarrhea, vomiting, flu symptoms, etc.) within the 48-hour period prior to the day of co-op will not be allowed to attend co-op that week.

Q:

What else does KHC have to offer besides educational instruction?

A:

We aim to make KHC a valuable resource for your homeschool needs and more. We’re new, but give us a little time and we plan to offer you and your family: 

  • college prep workshops 

  • social activities that build community and confidence in our students 

  • parent-centered workshops to encourage, educate, equip you for the homeschool journey 

  • community outreach to connect us to the mission of loving our (local) neighbors as ourselves 

  • and some potluck get-togethers  that’ll make you think you at Big Mama’s house fo’ real, y’all! 

Q:

How are KHC instructors vetted?

A:

We know who teaches your child matters to you as much as what they are teaching. KHC teachers are all experienced home educators, and many of the teachers have taught in public schools, private schools, colleges, or at other homeschool co-ops. In addition, each teacher has been assigned a KHC board member who will support/mentor the teacher throughout the year.

Q:

Can I donate money, goods or services to KHC? And are they tax-deductible?

A:

Absolutely! KHC has monthly, semester, and yearly expenses, and any donations to help cover these costs would be greatly appreciated. Any donations received before our IRS 501c3 status is obtained would be considered charitable but not tax-deductible. We plan to have our official nonprofit status by the end of 2021. Once obtained, all donations will then be tax-deductible.

Q:

Does KHC have any immediate needs?

A:

Thank you for asking! Right now, there are several startup costs that come with establishing a state-registered nonprofit organization. Any donations that we receive would go toward these startup costs. Also, here is KINDRED's Amazon Wish List.
