Prairie Community Co-Op

FAQs

Q:

What kind of Co-Op is PCC? Is this a religious Co-Op?

A:

PCC is a secular, inclusive co-op. Although we lease space from a church in order to use the classrooms, we are not affiliated with any religious organization. We do not require a statement of faith, we do not teach faith-based classes. We do respect each members' beliefs and strive to support everyone's homeschool journey.

Q:

What ages does this PCC accept?

A:

PCC is for all school-aged children, ages 5 through teens. At least one child per family must be at least 5 years old, though we do have nursery/littles options for younger siblings.

Q:

Is this a drop-off Co-Op?

A:

No. A responsible adult is required to stay on site during Co-Op.

Q:

What is required of Co-Op parents?

A:

Parents are required to volunteer for one of the following weekly committees: building set-up, lunch clean-up, recess supervision, or end of day clean-up.

Parents must be willing to volunteer as teachers, classroom assistents, and substitute teachers.

Parents should be willing to let kids get messy and have fun.

Q:

How much does PCC cost?

A:

Since we run at cost, fees can vary slightly from session to session. We keep costs as low as possible.

At this time, each family pays approximately $30 per session for building fees, between $20-$30 per session for insurance, and between $10-$20 per child per session for class supplies. Fees must be paid at the beginning of the session so that we can pay rent and insurance. If you need to work out a payment plan, just let an admin know ahead of time.

Q:

What is PCC's attendance policy?

A:

Since parent volunteers are vital to the running of our Co-Op, we rely on everyone to attend each class day. If you or your child is sick or otherwise unable to attend, you must contact an admin so that we can make arrangements to cover your responsibilities.

Q:

What kinds of classes does PCC offer?

A:

PCC offeres parent volunteer led classes in a variety of subjects. Past class offerings have included japanese, civics during a zombie apocalypse, modern machines, life skills for teens, cooking, dungeons and dragons, science, and art. The kids learn better when taught by an adult who has passion for what they are teaching so we encourage parents to teach something that they themselves enjoy.

Q:

What are the age ranges and class sizes?

A:

This can vary with enrollment but we do our best to balance out our classes so teachers don't get overwhelmed. In the past, most classes had 6-10 students and were usually a range of two to three years age difference (for example: 5-7 year olds in one class and 8-10 year olds in another).

Q:

What curriculum does PCC use?

A:

Our Co-Op classes are designed to be enrichment rather than academic, and should be used as electives to supplement the curriculum your family uses. We do not follow any particular structured curriculum.

Q:

Does PCC celebrate holidays?

A:

Though we are not a religious Co-Op, we do love a good party so we will celebrate things like Halloween or Christmas with a potluck.

Q:

Does PCC accept LBGTQ+ kids?

A:

We are an inclusive Co-Op and respect and celebrate all of our kids. We will honor whatever name, pronouns, or identity you or your child prefer.

Q:

What is PCC's non-discrimination policy?

A:

Prairie Community Co-Op is an inclusive Co-op. We do not allow discrimination of any kind, including (but not limited to) discrimination on the basis of race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status such as disability, age, marital and family status, sexual orientation and gender identity, health status, place of residence, economic and social situation

Q:

What if I don't want to teach a class?

A:

Parent volunteers are usually required to teach and/or assist in at least one class each session (a total of 11-12 lessons). While this can be daunting, we are always willing to help and mentor parents through this process.
