FAQs

Q:

What is your primary goal?

A:

Our primary goal is to train students to address life issues in a manner that glorifies God and engages the culture for Christ. We do this by using competitive speech and debate as the avenue through which students learn to think critically, articulate winsomely and communicate graciously in a manner that pleases God.

Q:

Where and when does your club meet?

A:

We meet every Thursday afternoon in Brookfield, WI during the academic year. Details are further available by connecting with our club's president or vice president.

Q:

Where are qualifying tournaments held?

A:

Qualifying tournaments are held in the six states of our region: WI, MI, IL, IN, OH, KY.  National tournaments are also conducted using the NCFCA online platform, allowing students from across the nation to compete together from home. Each family must pay their own affiliation and tournament fees, lodging and meals according to their chosen participation.

Q:

What is NCFCA?

A:

NCFCA is the National Christian Forensics Communication Association, a Christian debate and speech league made up of hundreds of homeschool families as well as some Christian school and Virtual school students across the country.  Learn more about the organization at their site NCFCA.

Students will participate in classes in the fall semester. In the spring semester, students will participate in club, and at least one NCFCA tournament. We are a cooperative club, not a drop-off, and all parents participate in the successful operations of the club in one way or another.

Membership shall be open to all persons in agreement with the purpose of Salt and Light as stated in the Statement of Faith and Position Statements available for preview before joining. Salt and Light mirrors the NCFCA requirements for participation in their league.

More details are available in the Salt & Light by-laws, and are shared at an annual orientation meeting in the fall or by discussion prior.

Member families will pay class fees, membership dues, and their own tournament expenses.

Q:

Are there any fees for this club?

A:

All families need to join Salt and Light Speech and Debate Club in order to register for classes.  Costs include club fees and class fees.  Club fees include website and forum access, as well as part of the cost of using our host facility.  Each class will have its own fee to be determined by the instructors with the help of the executive committee. Salt & Light is a cooperative club. Instructors are volunteers and do not charge for their expertise, and fees are limited to expected expenses for each class.

To compete in NCFCA you must pay an affiliation fee.

Affiliation Fee Structure
Affiliation with the National Christian Forensics and Communications Association (NCFCA) is per family and based on the current competitive season. The Affiliation fee varies by year.  Often discounts are offered for early affiliation.  Information for the current year can be found at NCFCA Affiliation. Scholarships are available in the case of financial hardship by demonstrating the financial need to Office@NCFCA.org. Affiliate fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.

Qualifying tournaments are held in the six states of our region: WI, MI, IL, IN, OH, KY.  Each family must plan to pay their own tournament fees, lodging and meals according to their chosen participation. We do ask all families with students age 12 and up to compete in at least one tournament of their choice.
