A BETTER LIFE highlights the struggles of undocumented Latino immigrants in Los Angeles, for whom ordinary problems can easily turn into personal catastrophes and who cannot go to the police or the courts for protection. Carlos Galindo (Demián Bichir, in an Oscar-nominated performance) is a Mexican undocumented immigrant and veteran Los Angeles day laborer who has trouble connecting with his son, Luis, whose gang-affiliated girlfriend is tempting him to ignore his father’s example of clean living. Carlos buys a truck to begin working as a self-employed man and earn more money, but when it is stolen, his hopes for a more affluent life are dashed. Unable to turn to the police for help, father and son embark on a quest to find the vehicle. Drama. Running time: 98 min. View Trailer
Here is some guidance on how to make the trip as productive and run as smoothly as possible:
· The Avalon is now offering curricula for your use with your students. We expect their use will enrich the experience:
This Universal Curriuclum https://www.theavalon.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Universal-curriculum.pdfcan be used to introduce students to film appreciation concepts.
This curriculum https://www.theavalon.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/A-BETTER-LIFE-curriculum.pdf pertains specifically to “A Better Life”. It contains useful lesson plans and links to DCPS standards. At the end there are vocabulary words, questions for discussion and links to additional study guides.
· Here is a link to the trailer for the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwIzW7yk3ZI
· Anne Schaufele will conduct the post-screening discussion with the students. She is an attorney who works on behalf of immigrants and will be accompanied by an immigrant law student. Ms Schaufele is bilingual and able to provide translation when necessary.
· It is essential that we receive advance notice should you need to cancel or reduce the numbers of students. For those who fail to give at least one week notice of cancelation or do not show up at all, we reserve the right to deny admission for future screenings. There is a waiting list for this screening and we want to make sure as many students as possible are able to attend.
· On time arrival is important so as not to inconvenience other student groups and to make sure your students are able to fully take advantage of the program. Please allow time for possible transportation or other delays.
· Our theater is a historic theater of which we are very proud and ask that visitors are careful to treat it with respect, avoiding littering or harming it in any way.
· We don’t want anybody to miss any part of the film, so it is best if students visit the rest room before the film begins.
· Students should feel free to have honest reactions to what is happening on screen… laughing, crying, applauding… but please avoid talking during the film as it is distracting to other audience members. Save discussions for after the performance.
