COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

American Sign Language I
This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of American Sign Language and the culture that created it. The environment of the class is designed to be both fun and educational. The class will focus on vocabulary and on the mechanics of communicating manually instead of verbally. Some specific areas covered include fingerspelling, numbers, vocabulary, and verbs. The class will also include learning greetings and introductions in ASL & some basic grammar sentences.

Throughout the entire class, students will also learn about the culture of the American Deaf community. Songs and games will be incorporated into the curriculum to help students constantly review and practice what they have learned.

The class will include a midterm and a final exam for both the fall and spring semesters.

Although the instructor is hearing, classes will be taught in English and ASL with a portion at end with little or no spoken English on the part of the instructor or students to allow the students to learn the signs and ask questions verbally and then practice the signs they have learned.

American Sign Language II
Designed to build off of the ASL1 class offered through WEST, this American Sign Language course uses the vernacular, mechanical, and cultural knowledge of the students to begin developing the sentence structure and grammar of ASL. Through class discussion, homework assignments, videos, games, and music, students will expand their knowledge and skills of this beautiful language. Discussions will also delve more deeply into the culture of Deaf Americans.

American Sign Language III
This course is designed for students who have completed Ms. Marhea’s ASL1 and ASL 2 courses. It is intended for students who genuinely wish to develop and improve their signing skills, both production and comprehension. The class will review grammar using A Basic Course in ASL and also provide students with a full-immersion, student-led language learning environment. Students will demonstrate and practice their language skills through multiple presentations involving music, personal stories, and poetry. Students will receive personalized feedback and critique to help them develop their skills further. Students will perform as a class at the end of Fall & Spring semester showcase. Deaf Experiences in the community will be included throughout the semester.

>>This is a 2-semester course. Students may not register for this class for only the Spring Semester<<

The class will include a midterm and a final project for both the fall and spring semesters.

Although the instructor is hearing, classes will be taught in ASL. English will be used to clarify directions, but the majority of the class will be in ASL.

German I
In German 1, we will lay a foundation of German by learning greetings and introductions, colors, numbers, weather, school subjects, school supplies, hobbies and sports; using a textbook and workbook. Additional tools may involve partner activities, group activities, skits, presentations, trivia questions, crafts, games, art, music, physical engagement ("Please close the window." ) and perhaps cooking. The quicker students engage in the language, the more they will remember and the more fun they will have! I will use as many means as possible to encourage student involvement!

Grades will be based across an even distribution of: written homework, oral participation in class, small group assessments, quizzes and tests

German II
In German 2, we will continue building on the foundation laid in German I; using a textbook and workbook.  There will be further development of conversation through partner work in German.  Also, the techniques incorporated in German 1 of skits, partner dialogues, group activities, presentations, trivia questions, crafts, games, art, music, physical engagement, and maybe cooking, if time allows.

German III
In German 3, we will expand the German skills to include more short story reading, writing and class discussion. We will use Deutsch Aktuell 2 (5th edition-2004) as a foundation for grammar and vocabulary.

High School Spanish I

Middle School Spanish (2-year rotation of topics)
This class is a rotation class so students will visit Latin America to learn about the culture, songs, flags, and food of México, Guatemala, Panamá, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina. Each student will have a passport and will get a stamp after finishing their assignments.

Every time a student will visit the country, they will also learn basic conversational skills, pronunciation, greetings, introductions, classroom directions, numbers, alphabet, telling time, days of the week, months, weather and seasons. All taught through immersion in a Spanish environment and engaging in FUN, 5th – 7th grade activities (songs, dance, cooking, arts and various activities) that are designed to help students develop a knowledge and appreciation of Latino/Hispanic culture. My class usually is 1hour teach and 30 min of games and manipulatives so students learn more, I use quizlet, kahoot and other online games.

We also have a field trip to the Mexican bakery where they teach the students how to make Mexican bread and decorate cakes, this will be an extra cost and optional.

Latin I
In Latin 1, we will lay a foundation of Latin Verbs and Nouns using an easy to read and easy to follow textbook. Students will double their vocabulary comprehension as they learn the English derivatives. In Latin class, students will build a foundation of language skills through route drills, fun word root games, and exploring parts of Roman history, traditional hymns, classic sayings, and more. Students will memorize vocabulary, keep a Latin notebook, and complete workbook assignments at home. Students can expect to have 20-30 minutes of homework 3-4 times a week. Latin uses many English language concepts so students will naturally deep dive into English grammar as they learn. Why dive deep into English? Because Bible concordances use English language structure to translate and explain scripture. Every couple of weeks our class will pause to review and master the content already presented. Anyone can learn Latin with First Form Latin and a fun class environment!
