About Monocacy Home Educator's Co-operative

Monocacy Home Educator's Co-operative is a secular and inclusive homeschool co-op. It was formed by several homeschooling families in the fall of 1999 and officially began meeting in the spring of 2000. The co-op moved to St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Utica, MD in January of 2001 and have been meeting there ever since.

We meet on Wednesday's from 9:00 am - 1:30 pm from late August through early May. We have a 14 week Fall semester with two 7 week sessions and a 14 week Spring semester also with two 7 week sessions.

At the end of each semester, we may hold a talent show or art fair with student performances and class displays.  Each meeting day begins at 9:45 with arrival.  The rest of the day is divided into 3 class periods of 50 minutes each, plus lunch and recess.  Our morning session is composed of 2 classes followed by lunch with each family bringing their own lunch and then recess and the 3rd class. Our teens have an optional 4  periods and their day can begin at 9:00 am. Our teen drop off program is for teens that are 14 by September 1 of the current year. They start at 9:00 am and end at 1:30 pm.There is a $100 per semester per student fee for this program..

At the end of the year, a planning meeting is held to determine the classes and schedule for the next year.  For folks that can't attend, they can submit their ideas to the coordinator prior to the meeting. We then take all the suggestions and try to create a workable schedule based on both the children's interests and what the parents feel comfortable teaching (usually there are more ideas than we can actually schedule space for each semester).  The assortment of classes is different each time, depending on the mix of families attending.

Some of the classes that we have held in the past include:

Drama (there is a very nice little stage there) Physics of Toys, Dinosaurs, Junk Art, Bridge Building, Military History, Mathemagics, Hands-On Science, Cooking, Needlework, Music, Big Cats, Astronomy Games, Stategy Games, Living History, Wives of Henry the VIII, Classical Mythology, Nature Study, Nature Journaling, Continent Study, Clay Play, Co-operative Games, Karate, Jazz Dance, Sign Language, Newsletter, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain,. Portrait Drawing, Puzzles/Mazes/Math Games, Paper Crafts, Scottish Dance, Ballet, Book Discussion, You-Be-the-Judge, Horses, Square Dance, Yearbook, Yoga, Forensics, Ancient History, Art Journaling, King Arthur, Anime and many, many more.

There are 5 age groups and in general they are: 4-6, 7-9, 10 -12; 13-15 and 14 & up. Depending on the make-up of the families participating, that could shift slightly. We also have a nursery available for siblings.

COST: $100 per new enrolling family for the first year. Current members pay $45 per semester. This is a non-refundable fee. A $10 late fee should be added to payments after the due date set by the coordinator. Some classes also have an additional materials fee.
