FAQs

Q:

When and where does EarthSchool meet?

A:

EarthSchool has two locations.

  • ESSM (Southern Maine) gathers weekly on Thursdays from October to May in Gorham.
  • ESMM (Midcoast Maine) will gather weekly on Tuesdays from October to May in the Brunswick area for meet-ups and field trips.
    • EarthSchool trialing a weekly playdate only option in the Brunswick area.

EarthSchool also organizes an outdoor adventure group through the summer months for member families to explore and stay connected.

Q:

What types of classes are offered?

A:

Class offerings are dependent on what parents (and teens!) have volunteered to teach. Each session has a variety of classes for all age groups. Past sessions have included art (painting, clay, sewing), theater, outdoor skills, cooking, math games, creative writing, entymology, and much more.

Q:

What is the age range?

A:

ESSM usually has 45-50 member familes, with children ranging from newborn to 18 years old.

Q:

What does a typical day at ESSM look like?

A:

ESSM members arrive at 9:30 am to help set up our rental building. Two classes are held from 10:00-11:00 and 11:00-12:00, then we break for lunch from 12:00-1:00. There are two more classes from 1:00-2:00 and 2:00-3:00, then members put away chairs and tables and clean up. ESSM does not have "drop-off" classes - all children must have their parent(s) or other responsible adult at the building for the day.

Q:

What does it cost to join ESSM?

A:

Our current membership fee for the 2019-20 year is $200.00 per family. Payment plans are available. Some teachers may also require a fee to cover the cost of supplies for a particular class.

Q:

How much of a time commitment should I expect as a member?

A:

ESSM runs on the energy if its members. Families have many volunteering options to choose from, so all members can contribute according to their strengths. All parent members are required to volunteer 3-4 hours each Thursday -  options include teaching classes, assisting classes, helping in the infant/preschool room, and setting up and cleaning our space.
