2018-19 Class Descriptions

Class Descriptions

Arts & Crafts
Ages: 5-6, 7-9, 10-12
Materials fee: $25
We will be working with a variety of art and craft projects this coming year as well as seasonal crafts.  We will use a variety of medium and techniques.  Some projects will take a few classes to finish. I have a passion for arts and crafts and turning the ordinary house hold item into something extraordinary. I hope to inspire your children’s creativity for them, as well, and for them just to have fun.

Art Technique
Ages: 5-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13+
Materials fee: $15
This year, in Art Technique, students will learn the five basic elements of design. We will work together on some guided drawing assignments to gain drawing skills and confidence.  From there we will explore a variety of art styles using different art mediums. We will include an artist study which will allow students to appreciate the masters and learn about their art style and techniques.  We may even try our hand at imitating a famous artist. The older students will have an opportunity to try out graphic design which will give them a business application to their artwork.

Chess Club
Ages: 7-9, 10-12, 13+
Materials fee: $3
This year in Chess Club we will have structured practice and tournaments for the returnees. For Newcomers there will be instruction, practice time and competition.
The US Chess Federation states that "Chess is an educational tool aiding in the learning of planning, cause and effect relationships, pattern recognition, and research, all key skills for success in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics)".

Creative Solutions
Ages: 5-6, 7-9
Materials fee: $12
This year in Creative LEGO Solutions students will be given build challenges each week. We will have individual and group builds. Students will be encouraged to use their creativity and imagination. We plan to have fun and even learn a few things along the way.

Constitution- Rockin' the Constitution
Ages: 7-9, 10-12
Materials Fee: $10
Because a time-traveling talking horse is more fun than memorizing dates and names, we will use a generous donation of Rush Revere and the Star-Spangled Banner books as an engaging way to help students understand the basics about the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  Approximately 15 minutes of reading outside of class will be required each week.  This can be accomplished with a parent, of course.  We will do some reading during class, but much of our time will focus on discussion, games, and activities that support learning about the Constitution.

Finance
Ages: 13+
Materials fee: $3
This year in Finances, we'll look at money, and learn to spend and save, correctly. We'll look at debt and learn about the burdens that it can bring. We'll learn to use money as it should be used.

Geography
Ages: 5-6
Materials fees: $5
Last year we looked at Oceans and Continents, and practiced some map skills. This year we will study different Landforms and Bodies of Water, and add some more map skills. The class will include read alouds, coloring, activity sheets, crafts, and games.

Home Ec
Ages: 5-6, 7-9, 10-12, 13+
Materials fee $20
Home Economics will be focused on learning skills needed for everyday life. The main focus will be on cooking, however, we will be studying an array of life skills such as basic shop, household management and even etiquette. Knowing how to cook a meal is necessary for life. Knowing how to behave while eating the cooked meal is not life sustaining, but it can make life easier and social situations less awkward! If you are interested in cooking or you love to eat, this is the class for you. If food allergies are a concern, this may not be the right class for you.

LEAP (Learn, Engage and Play)
Ages: 5-6
Materials fee:  $8
Learn and play through stories, art, music, crafts, games, and activities all designed to get us learning about ourselves, our world and our classmates. Come and join me for a fun and engaging class with a little bit of everything thrown in. This class will also be collecting pennies this year for an end of year project (based off of one of our lessons). My hope is that each child can contribute 231 pennies throughout the year (we will start with 1 penny an and add a penny each week throughout the ECHO year).

Music
Ages: 5-6, 7-9
Materials fee: $5
Materials note: 7 – 9 year olds will need to bring their own “Baroque” (not German) fingering recorder to class weekly. Yamaha or Aulos are reliable quality brands for beginners and many other brands are fine as well. They are available from music stores like Ted Brown Music or online. If your family already owns a recorder here is how to tell if it is Baroque or German fingering: a German-fingering recorder has hole five (counting from the top) which is smaller than hole four, whereas Baroque recorders have hole four which is smaller than hole five. Most recorders sold are the fingering you will need, but it’s good to check.
Music is an amazing part of God’s creation! Our class will learn the basic elements of music including rhythm and note-reading skills, as well as using our ears, bodies, and voices. Activities will include singing, listening, movement, rhythm instruments, and games. Students will describe and discuss music: is it loud or soft, high or low, and what instruments do we hear? We will focus on one or two composers and their work over the course of the year, learning about who the composer was and how their music is unique. Students who have previously taken music class are welcome to return: we play and sing new music each year!

On The Spot
Ages: 7-9, 10-12
Materials fee: $7
On the Spot is a hands-on, interactive class that focuses on building positive peer interactions and communication.  Students will practice both impromptu creative problem solving skills in groups, along with having longer periods of time to work to create solutions to presented problems.  Challenges will prompt children to use words, actions, or materials to demonstrate solutions, while the teacher works as a facilitator.   This active class is great for kids who like to think outside-the-box or would like an opportunity to practice creative thinking with the support of peers and adults.

Outdoor Skills
Ages: 7-9, 10-12
Materials fee: $12
This year in Outdoor Skills, we will focus on learning survival skills, identifying the difference between safe and dangerous elements in nature, and work to understand the great outdoors. Students will be asked to engage in discussion, work with classmates to learn facts, and participate in the creation of a survival kit. This class is designed for students who love to explore God’s creation and want to learn the basics of navigating it safely.

PE
Ages: 5-6, 7-9, 10-12
Materials fee: $13
PE is an educational course aimed at maintaining the body through physical exercise. Students will participate in activities which will emphasize teamwork. Students will also learn how to perform exercises which will promote a healthy lifestyle. PE is an outdoor class and students should come prepared with appropriate shoes and attire.

Photography: Snapshots of God's World
Ages: 10-12, 13+
Materials fee: $12
A good picture tells a story, but some stories are better than others!  We will learn about how to get the most out of your camera, how to compose a "click-worthy" picture, how lighting affects emotion, and how to plan your pic before you click!  Students will need a camera--preferably digital so that we can share pictures and critique our work together.  Cameras may be DSLR or point-and-shoot.  Materials fee $12 for printing and mounting.

Preschool
Ages: 3-5 AND potty-trained
Materials fee: $17
Please Note: Our preschool class stays together the entire ECHO day and does not switch classes like the other groups. You will only need to choose preschool once. There is only one materials fee for the entire day.

Prep for Success
Ages: 13+
Materials fee: $5
Preparing for Success presents a kaleidoscope of topics that our youth will encounter as they prepare to enter the world of independence.  Students will explore topics that are becoming of high interest for them as they approach the age of more responsibility: job interviews, preparing applications, creating resumes, income and expenses, budgeting, meal planning, and vehicle purchases.  In addition, students will take candid photos that represent our ECHO children and help organize the yearbook with software.  As a final project, students will work as a management team to organize the End of the Year Program.  From leadership to organization, management to creativity, Preparing for Success is a class that will support our growing adolescents as they enter into God’s world.

Science - STEM Challenges
Ages: 7-9, 10-12, 13+
Materials fee:  $13
This year is going to be a challenge......STEM challenges. The egg drop is back! Plus other exciting STEM challenges. Students will also spend time designing their own STEM challenge with the winner's design to be used in class. The year will end with a bridge building challenge that will be showcased at the end of year performance (in a manner still to be determined).

TED Club Class Description
Ages: 10-12, 13+
Materials fee: $5
What is TED Club?- In Ted Ed clubs, students work together to discuss and celebrate creative ideas, engage in critical thinking exercises and gain invaluable presentation skills.  At the end of the session, students are invited to give their own TED Talk.  They can choose to upload it to the Ted Ed award-winning platform where it can be referenced on a resume or college application.

Identify Your Passion-  "What makes your heart beat faster?" The first part of the club curriculum has students explore the ideas they're passionate about. By dividing into activities that expand curiosity, club members will identify and discuss what matters most to them.

Choose Your Idea- "What is your big idea?" As students journey through the club curriculum, they'll be challenged to identify and shape the story only they can tell.  Through guided brainstorms and active peer feedback exercises, students will craft their very own TED-style talk.

Start Talking- "How can your idea change the world?"  By the end of their club cycle, students will have prepared and delivered their very own TED Talk.

Writing the Novel Way
Ages 10-12
Materials fee: $5
Students will also need a binder dedicated to this class, along with paper and pencils. Homework will be assigned likely every week, and IS mandatory. Access to a computer (for writing) is recommended.

God has given people many different ways to communicate, and one of them is through the gift of language. The purpose of this class is to inspire people to use language to create a novel, and to enjoy doing it! It is more fun to learn language skills when you have a tangible creation in your hands at the end! We will brainstorm, plan major events in our stories, define and develop the main characters, describe the settings and more. There will be story sharing amongst the students, and peer reviews. We will work on writing heartily, and keeping a reader’s interest. In this course, we will go over grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. There WILL be writing!
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
