The Art and War of Beowulf Workshop for 8th - 12th Grades

Cost : $120/person (due to the cost of copper, etchant, and corresponding tools) $50 to reserve $75 upon arrival at camp

2 family members: $100 each

3 or more family members: $75 each

Extra cost: $35 for coif rings (6,000 extra rings. This project will be begun in class and finished at home)

A reservation fee is required up front.  Please mail checks payable to Amy Bright at 238 W. Gap Creek Dr. Greer, SC 29651.This is a Monday through Friday event.

Please join us for a unique Literature and Art opportunity for your middle and high students this summer. The Art and War of Beowulf: Exciting Encounters with the Epic Text!

If you have a home school student, this workshop can be added to your English for the year to help make it honors. Ms. Bright can help with an honors addendum. There is a class limit!

Text : Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf ( Please purchase this specific translation and in regular book format).

Students must have the book read and highlighted before the first day of class? I will operate all our discussion under the assumption they’re very familiar with the text. More details will be emailed once students have signed up.

End products :

1. Chain maille piece (student’s choice of coif, showpiece necklace, headpiece, or dice bag)

2. Etched copper cuff

3. Stamped copper bracelet or other jewelry piece focused on kennings or other AngloSaxon

literary devices/quotes

4. Torcs (braided wire and hammered copper)

5. Collaborative blog following the workinprogress along with reflections about the process and literature

The final day of class will include a feast and art exhibit to showcase the week's work.
