Additional Information
Students will practice the skills of forensic scientists by identifying a DNA sample left behind at a crime scene. They will run DNA samples with the aid of electrophoresis and analyze the results to crack the case! The field trip will conclude with an observation of their fully operating research lab as well as Q&A time with one of their On-Site scientists.
The institute has only 6 gel electrophoresis chambers and because of this space is limited to 24 students.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand how DNA can be used to solve crimes.
- Use gel electrophoresis to visualize DNA and help to solve a crime using biotechnology tools.
- Discover more about biotechnology careers and how scientists are working to solve world challenges.
NGSS Aligned Standards:
HS-LS3-1 Ask questions to clarify relationships about the role of DNA and chromosomes in coding the instructions for characteristic traits passed from parents to offspring.
