FAQs

Most Asked Questions (and Our Answers)

Q:

What do I need to be sure I understand about HEARTS?

A:

We are a Christian co-op for families with at least one year of homeschooling experience who are committed to homeschooling through high school. While our classes are taught by teachers, parents are still expected to fulfill volunteer requirements.

Q:

What is HEARTS' typical school year?

A:

We begin meeting after Labor Day. We host a back to school night followed by our first week of school.

Our orientation takes place late August but we use an online platform to allow families to join from anywhere.

We finish the first or second week of May.

Q:

Are there special events for students?

A:

HEARTS has a student council, field trips, prom, and clubs. Students may also join various sports teams with local private schools.

Q:

Does HEARTS provide a transcript?

A:

No, we do not provide a transcript. However, we recommend joining HEAV and HSLDA for support with developing one as well as gaining access to the enormous additional resources they offer. Joining HEAV will provide you with a teacher ID card to take advantage of teacher discounts available at various merchants.

We do host informal meetings to go over how and what to track for both college and beyond. We also provide guidance and recommendations based on the veteran homeschool families in our group. There is ample knowledge and experience homeschooling through high school without our group.

That being said, most of us ultimately belong with the organizations below.
Homeschool Educators Association of Virginia
Homeschool Legal Defense Association

Another great resource for Christian Education is the Stanley M. Herzog Charitable Foundation whose mission is to catalyze and accelerate the development of quality Christ-centered K-12 education so that families and culture flourish.

Q:

What are the minimum and maximum age to attend?

A:

Students must be 12 by September 30 of the start of the school year to attend Hearts. Maximum age is 18.

Q:

What are the academic expectations at Hearts?

A:

All of HEARTS policies are important, but we cannot expect every student or parent to memorize them. Therefore, please print out a copy for home use and a copy for each of your HEARTS students to refer to when necessary. Thank you for your cooperation.

All students must be in agreement and willing to abide by these policies.

  • To participate in a class, a student must be at grade-level for the class as indicated by the teacher OR receive special permission from the teacher.
  • If your student needs to miss a class or leave early, it is their responsibility to contact the teacher to get any missed assignments.
  • On-time and consistent attendance at all classes is mandatory unless the teacher has been notified prior to the absence or in case of illness. Teachers will take attendance at the beginning of every class and students that are absent without an excuse or are consistently tardy will be penalized in accordance with each teacher’s policies on tardiness.
  • If a teacher cannot attend class, they will arrange for a substitute, otherwise parents will be notified that the class has been canceled. If it is already the day of class and a substitute cannot be found, students will use the class time as a study hall.
  • Grades will be provided to the parents each semester either via email, mail or online.  Also, if your student fails a test, the teacher will notify you. You may communicate with the teacher at any time via e-mail or by phone. Some teachers set “office hours” for students and parents to contact them and others allow calls anytime. Your teacher(s) will provide this information to you at the beginning of the class.
  • Teachers set their own homework policies and accountability for students getting things in on time, however cheating will never be tolerated at HEARTS and will require an immediate parent meeting. Please remember that you, the parents, are ultimately responsible for your students’ education. One of the most important skills your student will learn before graduating is how to manage their time and how to handle the pressures of being in a classroom environment with different teachers.

Parental Concerns

If parents ever have any concerns or issues with others within HEARTS (parents, teachers or students) please try to resolve it with the individual directly. If concerns are not resolved or concerns persist after direct communication with the individual, please contact the HEARTS Steering Committee for help in resolving the issue.

Special Needs

Although our teachers are willing and want to work with you and your student if there are learning issues, we lack the resources and training to address most learning difficulties. It is required that a student can independently work on assignments, maintain self-control in group environment and function at the appropriate grade and age level for a specific class. If you have questions as to whether your child can handle the rigor of a course, please reach out to our Registrar or Student Advisors to discuss if HEARTS will be able to accommodate your student. This information will not be shared with anyone other than the HEARTS Steering Committee or specific course teacher without your permission and we appreciate your understanding.

Q:

Is there a study hall offered?

A:

A study hall is provided for students who have a need to stay on campus.

A need to stay on campus is defined as:

  • Having a class directly before and directly after the study hall
  • Having a sibling who is on campus and you are leaving together
  • Having a parent who is volunteering or teaching
  • Having a carpool with someone who has to remain on campus

Students are not allowed to simply "stay on campus" or be dropped off early because of a parent's schedule. We are happy to work with the above outlined study hall needs, but we cannot serve as childcare.

Our Standards of Conduct apply during study hall.

Students may:

  • Work quietly and individually (Students may NOT talk during study hall, as we share a room with another class)
  • Sleep
  • Use their iPods quietly
  • Eat and drink, as long as they clean up after themselves
  • NOT sit on tables
  • NOT talk on cell phones during study hall (texting is okay)
  • Must obey the instructions of the hall monitor and study hall monitor at all times

If students would like to work on a group project during study hall, please ask the study hall monitor or a HEARTS supervisor if there is an empty room available to work in.

Q:

What is your academic year?

A:

Our academic year begins after Labor Day, starting with a Back-to-School Night followed by our first week of classes. Orientation is held in late August and takes place online, allowing families to join from anywhere. We wrap up the year in the first or second week of May.
