I am so thrilled for the opportunity to work with your children!  I have been homeschooling for 8 years and have 3 children who are uniquely gifted with different ways of learning.  When I started homeschooling, I had a strong desire for my children to love reading and grow in the knowledge of God’s world.  This is why I am so passionate about teaching countries and cultures, literature, and history.  My goal is for your children to walk away from my class with an increased knowledge of the subject and a hunger for more!  I have been part of several different homeschool coops, served in various positions such as academic coordinator, and have taught history, science, and literature classes.

Katie Culp

Hello and wishing you a very warm welcome to Thrive! My name is Katie Culp or “Coach Katie” and I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining the Thrive community offering the Footvolley-Soccer Essentials class to K-12th (broken down into 2 separate age groups) beginning in September. I was born and raised in Encinitas and recently launched Encinitas Footvolley Academy which teaches kids the fundamentals of one of Brazil’s most beloved sports (think volleyball using everything but your hands!) in a fun, high energy environment tailored to their age and skill level! Here’s a little bit about my background and the origins of this program:

Katie fell in love with soccer when she was five years old, playing club for Surf, La Costa Canyon High School, followed by a D1 college career at the University of Denver where she double majored in Sociology and International Studies. Katie’s love for soccer coupled with her passion for working with kids kept her coaching and tutoring throughout high school, college, and beyond, coaching youth club teams in Colorado and Hawaii, private clinics in North County, as well as working for the FC Barcelona Academy’s youth camp in 2021. Katie was inspired to live in Brazil from a young age, fascinated by their passionate “futebol” (aka soccer) culture, raw talent, style, and skill. While living in Brazil, Katie was in awe of the exceptional level of every Brazilian, being able to control the ball masterfully with every imaginable part of their body, whether playing on a field, in the streets, or on the beach. This led her to Footvolley, one of Brazil’s most popular sports, played similarly to beach volleyball - but with your feet, head, chest, etc! She’s partnering with some exceptional Brazilian soccer and Footvolley players and coaches to deliver this exciting new program designed by Encinitas Footvolley Academy.

In addition to coaching, Katie has spent several years in corporate tech positions, taught ESL English at an elementary school in Spain, and runs a small health & wellness business. She loves traveling, volunteering, surfing, and linguistics!

I can’t wait to get to know each one of your kids and help them improve their soccer skills and confidence with the ball while having a blast! Please reach out and I’d love to answer any questions you have!

Sheila Dawson

Thrive parents, I am delighted to once again bring my mobile woodworking classroom (converted transit bus) to you. My goal is to teach as many kids here as possible how to swing a hammer, saw a board clamped into a miter box, drill holes and drive nails to build desktop toys and ultra useful projects with basic hand tools.

I began teaching in1974 and while I can't remember all the places I've taught, one of my favorite "jobs" was the 18 years of summer camps I conducted at the Y.M.C.A.'s of San Diego (1997-2015) which I called "Build it." Another favorite "job" was bringing miter box sawing and projects it to Francis Parker Elementary School for a few years in the early 1990's.

I have been blessed with many awesome "jobs" over the decades; speaking at various seminars, enjoying newspaper and television coverage, getting an A.S. in Child Development and writing a book on my program "I Can Build it Myself" (out of print). All this and more making for a very busy life while raising two children after my husband passed away. I have a tiny house in the Clairemont area of San Diego just right for me and I am blessed with a 90 foot driveway long enough for my bus and room for a "camp" area for my summer work with kids.

Looking ahead, I would be so pleased for a chance to teach your 2nd - 5th grader safe and effective hand tool techniques in my woodshop bus classroom. They will learn relevent and practical skills for a lifetime.

Laura DeSoto

Hi and a very warm welcome to Thrive!!  I'm Laura DeSoto and am so thrilled to serve as department head of math and science and vendor of science!

After graduating from Wheaton College with a B. S. in Biology and a teaching certificate from Illinois, I have enjoyed teaching for many years in a variety of venues. From the Christian school classroom, to an outdoor education center serving the needs of at-risk inner-city children, to the wilds of Papua New Guinea with the Peace Corps, to my own living room, I strive to make lessons as fun as they are meaningful. Most recently, I have discovered the pure joy of developing and teaching classes for the homeschool community. Here, more than anywhere else, I find the freedom to teach what truly is most important.

In addition to enthusiastically preparing for my classes, I can be found hanging out with my game-loving family (husband, daughter who will be a senior at Westmont and who is currently in Uganda!, son headed to UCLA, and two doggies) playing anything from ping-pong to name-that-tune to multiple day-long board games! I also frequent any hiking trail I can find to keep in shape for exciting climbs like Half Dome and Trolltunga in Norway that we’ve done recently. This summer I am climbing all SoCal’s tallest peaks in preparation for Mt. Whitney in October. There’s nothing quite like giving a shout of praise to the Lord on top of the world! ??.  For crazy stories about teaching in places as wild as Alaska's Kenai Fjords National Park or PNG's remote village of Henganofi, ask me about my favorite memories, scariest moments, or strangest experiences.

Please reach out to me with any other questions as well ( I am so eager to meet you and your kiddos soon!!

Bridget Dolkas

Hi there! Our family’s home school journey began nearly three years ago at Thrive’s inaugural year and we are so thankful to be a part of this community. I am very excited to be bringing “Violin Revolution- Intro to Violin” to the Thrive community in the upcoming year. It is going to be an absolute blast!

I have been playing the violin since age 5 and have performed professionally for 30 years. I love playing all different kinds of music (Bach to rock- LOL) and love sharing the joy of music with others. Along with performing, I have also taught violin for three decades. My teaching philosophy is to build a strong foundation of skill while also inspiring the student to explore the many reasons why music is so special, including to create, connect, and communicate.

I received a B.M. in Music Performance from USC, an M.M. in Music Performance from Manhattan School of Music, and attended UCLA for DMA (Doctorate of Musical Arts) courses. Locally, I have performed in the San Diego Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, the San Diego Opera, and La Jolla Summerfest, as well as on numerous concert series. My musical passion currently includes finding fun, interesting, and engaging ways to connect, heal, and empower people through music.

I am really looking forward to inspiring the next group of young musicians through learning to play the violin as well as contributing to the joyful culture at Thrive!

I have had the privilege to be hired for weddings, galas, proms, bridal and baby showers, as well as requests such as performance florals and individual arrangements, from celebration to sympathy. I have also participated and placed in the Coronado Flower Show, floral display and table design categories for 3 years.

Besides pouring over all things floral, I can be found in the kitchen, baking and enjoying tea parties! I love the ocean, the beach and gardening. I love to read… everything! My favorite books are the Bible, Ann of Green Gables & The Chronicles of Narnia. My favorite music is worship, classical, jazz & county. Last year Alexis took on her last interior design project, since then she has been home with her family and dreaming about her next chapter. She is excited about being a part of Thrive and can not wait to give back by teaching some of the things she has learned along the way.

Laura George

My husband and I were both born and raised here in San Diego. I graduated from SDSU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, which lead me into teaching high school Biology, Chemistry, Physiology and Anatomy in the San Diego School District. During my years in college, I discovered creation apologetics and was excited to share my passion. Spending some time on staff for Young Life prepared me in how to relate and guide students seeking answers including helping them connect science to their faith. I saw back then what many are seeing now, a broken public education system in which I felt called to no longer be a part of. I left teaching and got my second Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. I jumped straight into trauma/surgical critical care in a large local hospital, serving the population of San Diego County for the past 15 years. My love for education did not stop there, as I became an Advance Clinician in charge of creating and implementing new and on-going education for our critical care staff. Two years ago, we began our journey of homeschooling our three children, Jaxon, Lyla and Olivia and feel incredibly blessed by the community we have become a part of here at Thrive. I have felt a strong pull to leave healthcare and go back to my teaching roots where I can continue with my passion of helping kids deepen their faith through a love of science.

Welcome to Sandlotz—the home of UN-organized sports for your kids! P.E. Was NEVER Like This!

Greetings all--my name is Shaun Kennard (father of three of my own—college freshman, high school freshman, 6th grader) and I’ve coached organized youth sports for over 30 years.  I spent 25 years coaching high school water polo and swim, moved on to age group softball for five years, and have now spent several years coaching multiple teams/seasons of flag football.  I love it all!!  And yet I have always felt that there was something missing from what’s offered to our kids.  Now don’t get me wrong—clearly, I’m a huge proponent of organized sports and the lessons they offer our children—but sometimes it gets to be too much.  Back when I was a kid (and dinosaurs roamed the earth), all the kids in the neighborhood knew to just meet after school at the park or, yes, that empty lot, to play the game of the day.  And as long as you were home for dinner, all was well.  But times have changed.  No longer do those who attend the same schools seem to live in all the same neighborhoods and those empty lots seem harder to find.  So what’s a kid to do that just wants to spend some time playing (and burning off some of that extra energy) without the stress and anxiety of parents and coaches watching everything they do?

Enter “Sandlotz”.

One day a week, for roughly 60 minutes, we will play--kickball, dodgeball, steal the bacon, go for the gold, flag football, ultimate frisbee, tag, and a whole host of other, active games.  To start each “Sandlotz Session” we would spend just a little time learning a skill.  How to throw a ball, kick a ball, dodge a ball, catch and throw a frisbee, run faster, etc…  There would also be a short time spent doing some simple calisthenics—you know, burpees, pushups, shuttle runs, jumping jacks, etc…  Nothing intense but just enough to get them warmed up (besides—I think every kid should know how to do a good pushup or jumping jack).  From then on—it’s play time!!  And yes, we WILL keep score.  Every day there will be a winning team and a losing team.  Kids will learn how to win with humility and lose with grace and that neither one is really that big of a deal.  We will focus on sportsmanship, teamwork, strategies, playing hard and having fun!

Hello and WELCOME to Thrive! My name is Corey Reschke and I am SO excited to introduce myself to all of you and welcome you to the 21/22 school year!

I have been teaching for over 12 years , grades TK- 6th. Most recently I was a classroom teacher at a sweet private school in Rancho Santa Fe, Ca where I taught fourth grade for 10 years. When I left to have my two babies, Skylar ( 3 years old ) and Wyatt ( 1 year old ) I took a new job as HST at Pacific Coast Academy Charter Schools where I was a liaison for homeschool families- like yourself! I worked there for three years and loved helping parents teach their own kids. I learned so much about all of the resources, learning theories, and varied curricula that's available to families. I missed the actual day to day of teaching so much though, and I can't wait to be back inside the classroom doing what I believe God has gifted me to do- teach his little ones. I'm so excited to be teaching a Second Grade Core class as well as a US History Class ( 3rd-5th) this fall!

At Thrive we believe in what you're doing at home with your kiddos. We want you to continue your academic program and teaching at home while a getting rich, collaborative, meaningful experience in the classroom.  I have some exciting learning planned for your kiddos. I can't wait to meet you!

Matt Suncin

Skateboarding has been in Matt's DNA since the age of 10 when he first stepped on a board. By the age of 15, Matt had acquired significant skills to land him his first job as a skate instructor at a local indoor skate school. Fast forward through years of incredible opportunities during which time Matt built skills in multiple areas and proved himself as one of the tops in the community. In 2019, Matt was presented with the rare opportunity to work with the Chinese National Skateboarding Team as a professional skateboarding coach to prepare their athletes for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. His 3-month trial period with the team went extremely well and he was offered a long term position. However, Matt chose to come back to where it all started in the valley of the sun to continue to build his very own program and help his student pursue their big dreams, one push at a time. We are thrilled to have him teach here at Thrive!

Kristen Taylor

My name is Kristen Taylor and I’m very excited to join Thrive this year to teach both History classes and Soccer Skills in an exciting, dynamic, and fun environment.

I started playing soccer here locally at the SD Surf club and won two National Championships at the youth level. I then went on to play at the University of Portland where we won our school’s first NCAA Division I National Championship. After graduating with a History degree as an Academic All-American, I’ve spent the last 25 years coaching at various youth camps , holding private soccer lessons, and working as a personal trainer.

Whether your child plays for a club team or is just interested in trying out the sport, my goal is to foster their love of soccer, increase their skill and confidence level, or even ignite a new love!

I’ve spent the last 5 years making history come alive to my kids in a homeschool setting and now I’m thrilled to bring that to a larger group setting at Thrive. I use curriculum that beautifully weaves in God’s Word and plan throughout all of history in a chronological way. If only I had learned this way in elementary school 30 years ago! Hands on activities, games, maps, narration, and reading historical literature is my favorite way to not only make history fun but to also remember important key moments. Just like in coaching, kids are unique and learn in different ways.

In addition to being a crazy soccer fanatic and lover of history, I have three kids, 3 dogs, 5 rabbits, and a loving husband. Miles is a Junior at SFC, Owen is a Freshman at SFC, and Aubrey is a 7th grader here at Thrive. We love playing soccer, pickleball, hiking, traveling, and skiing as a family. I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to teach your kids at Thrive

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions. I look forward to meeting you and your children!

Gregory Thornquest

My Name is Gregory Thornquest. I have been in education for 17 years and spent many of those years coaching multiple sports as well. I’ve worked with a large spectrum of grade levels from 3rd to 10th. Over my career I have been blessed to teach History and the story of God’s people from the beginning of the Earth all the way to the current history  being made in our present time. The last twelve years I’ve taught at a classical school. While there I strove to teach my students to be critical yet loving life long learners.

I received my Bachelor of Arts and Teaching Credential from Azusa Pacific University, where I met my wife. Our lives are dedicated to loving God, purposeful careers, and driving our two children from activity to activity.

Ashley Warbrick

I am incredibly blessed to be a mother of two wonderful teenagers, aged 14 and 16, and have been happily married for 20 years. My journey includes earning a college degree in business from Cal State San Marcos and subsequently founding First Step Gymnastics. With over 20 years of experience in teaching gymnastics and personal training at EOS in Oceanside, I am deeply passionate about tumbling and fitness, a passion that stemmed from my competitive gymnastics background throughout high school and college.

I hold multiple certifications in gymnastics safety, personal training, nutrition, corrective exercise, CPR, first aid, and I am a certified movement specialist through ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association). Over the years, I have taught nearly every sport imaginable and have also served as a physical education teacher.

Exercise and fitness have always been integral to my life, and I am committed to continually expanding my knowledge and expertise within the fitness industry.

Casey Ward

Hello future Bitcoiners…I’m Casey Ward and I will be your passionate go-to guide for explaining the mysteries of Money, Bitcoin, and everything in between!

So I’m a local San Diegan and have lived here in paradise my entire life. I currently call Carlsbad my home, and the Village is my backyard. I played Football and ran Track my entire life, and I coached both sports in middle school & high school for 10+ years. Coaching was one of my favorite experiences.

One thing I need to disclose is that I’m an opinionated foodie. One example of this is that Dark Chocolate is the only chocolate. Another one is that pineapple IS allowed on pizza. I know that is a controversial take, but look I can’t control what my tastebuds love. Sorry. Don’t @ me!

I’m also constantly listening to music. I was raised on old school hip-hop, but I also love marinating on Lord Huron, the California Honeydrops, Khruangbin, The Avett Brothers, Steel Pulse, or my Classy Dinner playlist. My guilty pleasure is 90’s R&B or the Biebs….Shhhh

My dream is to go to culinary school one day and master knife skills, chopping, sauces, seasoning, and learn all the scientific methods for baking. My follow-up dream is to open a bakery that will be rooted in the local community culture. And yes, this bakery will run on a Bitcoin standard.

I’m also scared to death of horses. Majestic? Yes. But are they also terrifying beasts that if they decided to go ape there’s nothing you can do to control them??? Absolutely! The last time I was in a paddock my head was on a swivel.

Last thing. Culture drives everything. When you have a solid culture you can accomplish so much more. You can see this is families, work environments, sports teams, and the same is true for the classroom. My classroom will have a culture where I believe your kids will “Thrive”. Come find out…

Sharon Weldy

Hello wonderful Thrive Community! My name is Sharon Weldy, and I am so excited to become a part of the Thrive family this year!  I have spent most of my life in the Chicago area and am greatly looking forward to trying out some of the beautiful weather in sunny California! I  received a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana, and I am certified to teach mathematics for grades 6-12 in the state of Illinois. I have 15 years of experience in education, mostly in accelerated Christian schools. I have had the honor of serving in many roles in this environment, including: math teacher, department chair, academic dean, and school principal. Each new role has provided me with a wealth of growth and development as an educator, for which I am extremely grateful. I am absolutely passionate about empowering students in mathematics by providing them with a conceptual framework for understanding each topic. This approach frees students to reason logically, develop intuition,  and find their own creative approaches to problem solving. It also produces much more joy and confidence in the learning process.

I have three fantastic children who are 27, 25, and 21 years old, and two kitties (named Merry and Pippin after the LOTR hobbits).   Outside of teaching I greatly enjoy reading, hiking, gardening and spending time with friends and family.

I look forward to getting to know you this year!
