This class is a series of individual lessons. In the 18th & 19th centuries, before the invention of the sewing machine, everything was done using a variety of hand stitches. From basic clothing construction to mending, from the creation of quilts, linens and curtains to elaborate tapestries and other works of art – all were created by various methods of hand sewing. We will be learning a variety (10-12) of the most commonly used stitches and will create several small projects. These stitches were what every girl was taught from a very early age. Learning about stitching will teach history, economics, science and art as well as learning how to interpret instructions, plan out and finish a project. (You will need to supply your own needles, thimbles and scissors for each of the 8 classes.)
The fourth class: Penny Rugs will meet on 11/17/25 – Penny rugs are not rugs for the floor, as the name would seem to indicate. Rather they were used as decorative mats for tables, dressers, mantles, and as wall coverings or even pillow covers. Items are created by layering various shapes of felt and stitch them with a blanket stitch. Very often coins were used as a pattern to create circles, which were then stitched together, hence the name Penny Rug. Their decorative nature reflects a Victorian era trend of creating ornamental handicrafts to enhance the home. You bring needles, thimbles, scissors and your imagination!
You need to register for each lesson on its own so your child will attend as many or as few in which they have an interest. All lessons will be held at the same time and location as listed above.
