Charlotte Mason Conference Coming to Lancaster

By Julie Garner

April 10, 2014

Lancaster, PA – Poiema School, a half day Charlotte Mason-model school that works in cooperation with homeschool families, is hosting a Charlotte Mason Conference: Educating with the End in Mind on Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 9am to 12pm. The conference features well-known educator and contributing author, Maryellen Marschke St. Cyr as the keynote speaker. The event will be held at Wheatland Presbyterian Church, 1125 Columbia Avenue, Lancaster.

Maryellen Marschke St. Cyr is the founder and Director of Curriculum Development at Ambleside Schools International. She has been a professional educator for more than 30 years and possesses a passion for a congruent, life- giving method of education. She has become one of the foremost experts on the “common sense” education philosophy of 19th-century British educator, Charlotte Mason. Maryellen is a primary author of the book When Children Love to Learn.

This is the second year Maryellen is coming to Lancaster County to speak. One of the conference attendees from last year’s smaller event said, "I came away from Maryellen’s seminar both challenged and encouraged. Maryellen has a gentle yet compelling way of challenging parents to carefully consider and craft the words they speak, the books they read and the environment that they provide for their children. I was reminded of the importance of good literature, kind and encouraging speech and careful habit formation.” It is an honor to have Maryellen come to our area to speak for a second time, and if this event proves to gain popularity this year, we hope she will return again in the future.

This event is open to the public and is as much about practical parenting skills as it is about education. Parents, educators, and anyone who works with children are all encouraged to attend.

Registration is currently open. The cost to attend is $40 prior to May 3 and $45 thereafter. Childcare is also available during the event for a small additional fee. For registration information, please contact Faith Dempsy at faith@faithdempsy.com or 717-808-0315.
