What is Biz Town?

It’s a Program! It’s a Place! It’s BizTown!

Watch this short video for a bird's eye view of our York Biz Town Experience visit  that will take place on April 21  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cnt1699nAcw

Middle and elementary school kids are not old enough to drive, work, or be the boss. But that does not stop them from wanting to get a taste of adulthood. But how? Where? Simple! Through the  BizTown™ experience! That’s right! BizTown gives thousands of students in grades four through eight the opportunity to run banks, manage restaurants, read utility meters, write checks, and even vote.  BizTown combines in-class learning with a day-long visit to one of 28 JA World™ facilities across the U.S. and Japan where JA BizTown is housed. This is a fully interactive, true-to-life simulation where students learn the fundamental relationship between academics and life beyond school.

“Walking around JA BizTown writing checks, applying for bank loans, and assuming the role of a CEO, CFO, or radio station disc jockey may feel like fun and games for the students. But the fact is, JA BizTown puts the game of life into serious context for kids by helping them connect the dots between what they learn in school and how financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship – the economics of life – play out in the real world.”

Workshop Description:   Seven classroom workshops will be held at Christian Life Assembly, 2645 Lisburn Road, Camp Hill (see dates below) prior to our April visit to the Biz Town experience which is held on April 21.  Workshop dates are September 10, October 8, October 29, January 28, February 11, March 10, and April 14.  Times for workshops are 1 to 3:30 p.m.

Students will sit at tables of seven kids with one adult helper/table leader at each table.  Students will be taught material in a lecture as well as hands on format.  Each lesson contains a number of different activities including games and group activities to help reinforce understanding.  There will be a small portion of homework that is sent home each month.  Typical homework includes studying of vocab words and completion of any work that is not done in class.  Homework should not exceed more than 45 minutes per month.

In addition to the educational value to this program, we have found that Biz Town has provided our homeschooling students some beneficial opportunities they might not normally have such as; being required to sit in a classroom, work in a group of peers, and have someone besides their parent teach them.

Children will not be permitted to use electronic devices other than a phone to contact parents at the end of our session if need be.  Please do not allow them to bring any items such as ipods, psp, ds, or cell phones for any reason other than this.

Skills taught in the workshops:

What they learn as ‘business owners’:
·To responsibly manage staff, financial resources, inventories and customers.  To work as a team, To account for business expenses and still take in enough money to make a profit, To balance their professional and personal responsibilities.

What they learn as ‘consumers’:
To make wise financial decisions, To write checks and balance a check book, To make deposits into their bank accounts, To manage their BizTown money as they purchase what they need first, and what they want second, To understand their relationship, as consumers, to the economy.  Children also participate in completing job applications and interviewing for a job.  Students that are interested can also achieve optional public speaking experience.

All children will need basic math and writing skills as they will be performing the following tasks: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, figuring percentages, decimals, writing simple paragraphs and drawing.  Parent volunteers/table leaders will be available to help but they will be spread over seven children so it is preferred that students have at least a general knowledge of these skills.

Sign Ups:  Please sign up for all eight activities at once.  Do not wait to sign up. Please sign up only students that are participating, not adults. There will be a separate sign up for adult volunteers.

Deadline Date:  August 31 unless it fills up sooner.

Parent Volunteers: Parents will be asked to volunteer at once during these activities.  Volunteering could include set-up, tear-down of classroom, volunteering for a 2 1/2 hour time slot as a parent chaperone/table leader in Camp Hill, volunteering as a parent chaperone at the Biz Town experience in York and teaching.  Parents wishing to stay and help each week is not required but definitely appreciated. There are not, however, any facilities for younger siblings.  Volunteer sign up sheets will be circulated once your student is officially signed up for Biz Town.  Parents volunteering as a teacher will receive one free child admission in which case, you should notify Jamey before you pay.
