Jennie Wade was the only civilian casualty in the Battle of Gettysburg. Just 20 years old at the time of the Battle, Jennie was kneading dough in the kitchen when a rifle bullet pierced two doors and claimed her life. Note for younger students: part of the tour goes into the basement where Jennie’s body was taken and the family had to wait out the battle before she could be buried. In the basement, there is a cot with a manikin, covered with a quilt.

There is ample parking here so we will leave our vehicles and walk to the Shriver House, less than 2 blocks away (where there is limited, metered parking) If you choose to omit the Jennie Wade House, you will need to find your own parking, which is not difficult just inconvenient. There are also public restrooms at the Tour Center across the parking lot from the Jennie Wade House in case anyone needs to, well, you know, before we walk to the Shriver House.

This field trip is part of a “Build Your Own Gettysburg Tour" You can add the Shriver House and/or the Seminary Ridge Museum and Civil War Medicine program.

Covid Info: Masks are required. In signing up for a HAHA field trip or class, you are agreeing to our covid waiver. The waiver is viewable on our homepage.
