Join us as we learn about Shining Stars – a therapeutic riding ministry. We will learn what exactly what it is, how it got started and all the programs that the ministry offers today. We will participate in a training session for “side walkers.” What is a side walker, you ask? Come and find out!
After the training, we will get to practice side walking with a real, live horse! Families with younger students may take the “littles” out to the church’s playground while the older ones practice side walking as long as the children are supervised.
Attached is Shining Stars’ volunteer application form. Everyone who steps into the area with the horses needs to sign the Equine Activity Liability Waiver (p.3-4) If your students want to sign up as a volunteer they will need to fill out the whole form. Shining Stars’ volunteers also need to have background checks (unless they are under 14) so if there are any adults interested, you can discuss that with the Shining Stars rep that day.
If this event sparks interest but you do not live close enough to Gettysburg to volunteer, know there are other Therapeutic Riding programs within the HAHA footprint including Leg Up farm in York County and Franklin County 4-H Therapeutic Riding Center. You are still welcome (and encouraged) to join us at this event to get a preliminary understanding of what Therapeutic Riding is all about.
