FAQs

Q:

What is Walking Wise Homeschool Co-op?

A:

Walking Wise Homeschool Co-op is a weekly group of homeschooler families who gather together to:

  • Enrich their homeschool experience.
  • Support homeschool families
  • Build local community for homeschoolers
  • Offer resources (guest speakers, field trips, used curriculum fair, ect.)
  • Offer supplemental classes  (writing, historical places, legos, archery, poetry, public speaking, book club, hands on history, ect)
  • May offer core subjects (history or science)
  • Pool resources in parent-taught classes

Q:

What this Co-op is not...

A:

  • In order to keep expenses low and encourage community, we are not a “drop-off” co-op. All parents/guardians must stay on site the entire time during co-op.
  • We are not a daycare. There must be at least 1 child in kindergarten or higher in order for the family to participate.
  • We are not a secular co-op.  Our Christian, Bible-based faith will be reflected in our curriculum choices, our activities and the way we treat each other.

Q:

What does a typical Co-op day look like?

A:

  • We will meet Tuesdays (after Labor Day) from 9:30-12pm at Camp Bethel in Wise, VA.
  • After Co-op is over, families are encouraged to bring a sack lunch and to stay to fellowship in the picnic area across from The Outpost.
  • There will be 2-3 class options per block, with most likely 3 blocks. All will depend on how many kids register and ages and what their interests are, as well as teacher availability.
  • We'll be using the former daycare, outdoor area, greenhouse, and large building beyond the daycare. Please stay in these areas unless other arrangements are made.
  • We'd like to have a nature focus in several classes if there is interest and to take advantage of the outdoor space at camp.

Q:

What are my roles and responsibilities as part of this Co-op?

A:

  • In order to keep costs at a minimum all parents/guardians must teach, be a teacher’s helper or have another role. We’ll do our best to match your experience, interests and talents to find the best fit for you!
  • Please be on time and really be prepared for class, striving to have high quality classes.  We want to offer our kids our best!
  • All adults must complete a background check (link will be sent to you after you register. The cost is $10.75 and you’ll pay online when you fill out your information.
  • All families must agree to and sign our statement of faith and medical/photo release.
  • Please read the student responsibilities part of our co-op handbook to your child.

Q:

What is the cost to participate in the Co-op?

A:

  • $50/family per semester (if you are CHSV member, your receive a $25 discount)
  • Donation of a few cleaning supplies
