About YHSA

Many families in York County have accepted the responsibility of educating their children at home. Some of these have strong support from family and friends. Others do not.

York Home School Association, Inc. (YHSA) was founded on the belief that the ultimate responsibility for the education of children belongs to the parents (Deuteronomy 4:9, 6:1-25, and 4:1-4). Parents can more successfully carry out this responsibility with the support of like-minded home educators. Frequently, parents are called on to defend their decision to home educate their children and affiliation with a support group can strengthen the drive, desire, and beliefs that brought parents to the decision in the first place.

On average, YHSA has more than 400 member families and is a member organization of the Christian Homeschool Association of Pennsylvania (CHAP) and an affiliate of HSLDA (Home School Legal Defense Association).

During the early 1990's, the York Home School Association (YHSA) became a more structured organization, growing out of a group of several dozen families who met once a month for educational and social activities.

The newsletter, The Scholar, was first published in the fall of 1991. YHSA's first charter and by-laws were adopted during the winter of 1992. In May of 1992 the board of directors was established. The group incorporated in 1998.

Many annual events that were started in the late 1980's and early 1990's still take place today. The organization's busy calendar is always expanding to accommodate new academic and social activities.

The Mission

YHSA is a Christian support group, and it strives through all efforts to bring glory to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as prescribed in the Nicene Creed.

The mission of YHSA is to encourage excellence and integrity in home education.  YHSA exists to serve the interests of parents home educating their children as defined in Article 1b. *

Through the involvement and effort of all of its member families, YHSA's mission is to provide encouragement and resources for home educating families, assist those new to home education, provide information to those considering home education, and provide academic and social interaction with other parents and children with similar concerns and educational goals.

As a Christian group and in the interest of protecting our children, YHSA excludes those professing the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/questioning (LGBTQ) lifestyle. We define marriage as one man and one woman.

* Article 1b:  The term Home Education, Home Educating, Home Educated will hereby include those students educated at home under Act 169, those not of compulsory school age, and/or those under the Religious Freedom Protection Act (RFPA).
