Emilie Kosse To All Instructors
Hi! My name is Emilie, and I am an educator and writer currently living in Minneapolis (by way of Haiti, Washington, DC and NYC). I am deeply passionate about creating conversation, storytelling, and teaching history. My goal is to help people acknowledge the past and feel empowered by the information they learn. In guiding learners of all ages, I find that it is incredibly important to make the coursework as relatable as possible. To achieve this, I use several approaches: teaching with a variety of media, creating engaging in-class group activities, and encouraging topical conversations.
It is essential to know history, not so much to support the cliche of “history repeating itself,” but to understand what it means to be a human being in a global world. Understanding history means also understanding its primary sources--rather than textbooks which have interpreted the primary sources for the student--and to glean as much information as possible through experiential learning and through the arts and literature, which I think are absolutely essential to learning.
I think history is fascinating, and an opportunity for reflection and empowerment. The classes and workshops I create are as much of a social connection for students to participate in intentional conversation as they are about learning, unlearning, and growth.
When I’m not teaching, you’ll find me at the gym, playing with my daughter and our cat, or reading!
