The RR Museum of PA displays 100 locomotive & cars from the mid 19th & 20th centuries, while their programs focus on RR jobs between 1880-1920. We will learn how trains work, how they operated and what they do.

We will be given a guided tour, which will include visiting a small-town station where we will get a ticket to ride the train and then having our ticket punched while sitting in a passenger car. Our tour will also include a caboose stop as well as many other fun activities. Possibilities include: inspecting trains as freight conductors, learning to use flag signals as brakemen and/or loading and unloading baggage from a passenger train as baggage handlers.

There will be time, after the guided tour, to explore even more areas in the museum in a self-guided capacity such as Stewart Junction where there are many interactive exhibits and educational displays relating to the history & technology of the railroads that served PA & the nation. Steward Junction is housed in a recreated 1915-era freight station and features a G-scale model railroad switching layout, a LEGO train display and building zone, an exhibit on railroads in popular culture, an HO-scale model railroad diorama (under construction), and interactive freight exhibit, and so much more!

Look for other interactive displays located throughout the Museum including a recreated locomotive “firebox” where children can pretend to shovel coal, a set of Railway Post Office-style sorting tables where children can pretend to sort mail, and a series of “lift-and-learn” flip panels in the 1915 Golden Age of Railroading Street Scene.

Feel free to “brown bag” it as there will be tables set up in the back of the museum where you can eat your lunch.

Note: The attached map says masks are required. That is no longer accurate. Currently masks are OPTIONAL! If this changes, you will be notified. Their website https://rrmuseumpa.org/education/activities/ includes coloring pages, craft ideas and a book bingo to help supplement (or to prepare your student for) our event.
