Roleplaying 101

What is Roleplaying 101 and how does it work?

Roleplaying is a blend of acting on a stage and playing a board game, only there is no board and no stage. Students create a character and act that character out during the game session. The game is played in the minds and imaginations of the students participating. There are no limits to where you can go and what you can do in the game. The group creates its own goals and then decides how to get there.  Every player takes an active part in this. Play proceeds through interaction between the players and the world.  Polyhedral dice will be used frequently to determine the outcomes of specific choices (leaping across a chasm, avoiding oncoming traffic, etc…). This is not a board game! Each step is determined by the group and the outcome could be amazing or disastrous. Adventures are limited only by their imaginations and the journey is sure to be incredible.

A little more detail?

Each individual is an agent of their own fortune and an actor in their own story.  Together, the players create goals, develop plans, and make decisions with each other in an imaginative environment called the game world.  Players must learn how to work with each other's strengths even as they work with other characters' advantages.

There are no right or wrong decisions.  Similar to the real world, each player must judge the results of their choices for themselves.  Desired outcomes may not always occur, even if everyone tries the best they know how.

Part of the power of this type of experience is the opportunity to explore concepts in a "risk free" way.  Some will be fairly straightforward and others incredibly complex.  As players make choices for their characters, they determine the direction of the story and its tone.  In this way every event is unique and every story special.  Each table offers a unique experience with challenges and goals chosen by the table participants. Each session leads to the larger campaign and build up to its (hopefully) dramatic climax.

Some of the most important factors for a roleplaying experience are player autonomy, character vulnerability, comprehensive results, logical outcomes, and group synergy.  We want participants to make choices for themselves, not have decisions forced onto them.
