Additional Information

Calling all spellers! The HOPE Spelling Bee is on February 8-9, 2021!

HOW / WHERE / WHEN:

Our spelling bee will look different this year, but we are excited to offer the opportunity to encourage our students to develop their spelling skills.  Instead of an oral spelling bee, this year's bee will be conducted via an online test which will consist of 25 words that students will spell by typing their answers.  The student with the highest score on the test will be our champion and will compete in our regional bee!  The test will be available to be taken any time on February 8th or 9th.

WHO:

This event is open to all homeschoolers in Prince William county, not just HOPE members. Please share with your friends! Online registration is open to the public.

Since our champion will go on to compete in the regional bee, only residents of Prince William County may participate. If you would like to participate but live in Fairfax County, please contact FISHE for possible bee information.

Below are a few guidelines. For a full set of eligibility rules please visit http://spellingbee.com.

The speller must not have reached his/her 15th birthday on or before August 31, 2020 nor have passed beyond the eighth grade on or before August 31, 2020. There is no minimum age requirement, however ALL spellers will compete in one group. There are no specific grade level rounds.

REGISTRATION:

Registration Deadline (and last day for testing) is Tuesday, February 9, 2021.

Registration has TWO parts.

1.  Sign-up through the HOPE calendar so we know you are participating.

2.  Register for the Online Testing Platform on the National Spelling Bee website (https://online-test.spellingbee.com) so that your student can take the online test.

This 3-minute video describes how to register with the Online Testing Platform:

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htXzjpnMijc

When you create an account, you will need to sign up under the "Home Organization of Parent Educators" as your "school."  Note that the zip code you'll need to enter to find HOPE as your "school" is 20181.

TAKING THE TEST:

The online test will be available for your student to take on February 8 and 9.  He or she may complete the test at any time on either of those days.  There is a sample test for students to use to see how the online test works (should be visible after you've logged in).  Note that the sample test consists of multiple choice questions, but our HOPE test will NOT be multiple choice; our spelling bee test will be open-ended, requiring students to type in their spelling of each word.

PREPARATION:

The 2020-21 School Spelling Bee Study List is attached to the calendar event listing. Download it and use it to study and practice before the bee!

Parents, we want this to be a positive experience. We are excited to present this opportunity for our students to challenge themselves! Twenty of the twenty-five test words will come from the study list so that all students have the opportunity to prepare ahead of time.  Happy spelling!
