Onsite Safety Guidelines

Though attendance is taken at check-in, teachers and their assistants should know how many children are in their classroom each time and who is absent.

Teachers and their assistants should know where their students are at all times. Bathrooms are located close to all rooms, so no student should be wandering the building.

There are several lower-level rooms without windows in case of a tornado.

FIRE DRILL PROTOCOL

After teachers take attendance and explain what is going to happen and where their group is supposed to go, we will alert the rooms that we are doing a fire drill. Here is the protocol for a fire drill exit:

  • Although attendance is taken at check-in, teachers will note the number of children in their room and any absences.
  • Know where all three exits/entrances are: the main entrance (Exit #1), the top entrance that we use on Co-op mornings (Exit #2), and the one off of the small gym or down the stairs from the nursery (Exit #3).
  • Exit the building in an orderly manner with one teacher in front and the other in the back of the line.
  • Do not use the elevator for any reason.
  • The central outside meeting place will be located in the southwest corner of the parking lot, near the shed.
  • Students in the small gym, the classroom across from Little Sprouts, and the Little Sprouts will exit the back entrance (Exit #3) upstairs from the small gym. Any moms in the moms’ room will help escort the Little Sprouts out of the building, so these moms should also use Exit #3.
  • Students in the large room at the base of the stairs and the room down the hall from the large room will exit up the stairs and out the main entrance (Exit #1) to the church.
  • Students in the room off the large gym and the phy-ed students ( phy-ed students, please remain in the building until the fire drill is over so that students will know how to exit in the case of a real fire) will exit up the stairs and out the entrance that we use on Co-op mornings (Exit #2).
  • Students who meet in the library upstairs (if there were actually a fire) would stop at the nursery to help get the babies and toddlers out of the building using the back exit (Exit #3), located down the stairs from the nursery. Since we are not going to have the babies and toddlers do the fire drill, students who are meeting in the library will still exit down the stairs at that back exit (Exit #3).
  • Once everyone is outside, teachers should verify that they have all of their students in line, and we will return to the building in an orderly manner.
