Homeschool Driver’s Education Course with Westside Driving School

ODOT Approved Driver Education Program for Teens

The ODOT-approved Teen Driver Education course is a nationally recognized program that has been shown to dramatically reduce the likelihood of young drivers being involved in fatal and injury crashes.

The Oregon DMV grants a Drive Test Waiver to all students who successfully complete an ODOT-approved course offered by Westside Driving School. The student must still take the knowledge test at DMV.

 

Driver education is a three-part course:

  1. Classroom Instruction

The ODOT approved program requires that all students complete a minimum of 30 hours of classroom instruction. Which includes an ODOT curriculum completion.

  1. Behind the Wheel Lessons

· Students will sign up for a day and time for their driving lessons at the parent-student orientation.

· Student lesson scheduling is on a first come first basis of sign up and after fee has been paid (see below).

· BTW lessons begin after the students have had several hours of classroom instruction.

· BTW lessons are scheduled separately from the classroom.

· BTW lessons are two hours, with two students. Each student drives for one hour and observes for one hour.

  1. Parent Involvement

ODOT requires that all students drive with a licensed adult driver for a minimum of five hours of the driver education course.

 

ODOT Requirements for the Teen Program

  • Must be 15-17 years old to qualify for the ODOT teen program
  • Must have Oregon Driver’s Permit
  • Complete course before their 18th birthday.
  • Cannot get driver’s license before they complete the course.
  • 5 hours at home guided practice
  • Pass class/BTW with at least 80%
  • Must have had Oregon Driver’s Permit for at least 6 months before getting license.
  • Student must still take the knowledge test at DMV.
  • Drive test is waived if ODOT teen program is passed.

Westside Driving School Policies

  • Teen Driver’s Education Program fee $395
  • Attendance at ALL sessions is mandatory per ODOT
  • Missed sessions must be made up at an additional cost.
  • Classroom make-up $45.
  • BTW make-up $75.
  • If your teen misses the first class, they will not be able to participate in their first BTW lesson.
  • Cancellation fee $25. Cancellation fee after orientation $125.
  • Withdraw fee is $395.
