Lowcountry Christian Home Educators Association

The LCHEA Calendar is filled with many events and activities. Membership provides opportunities often not available to individuals. Most events listed below have occurred annually for many years.
Because LCHEA is a volunteer organization, any event or activity may be cancelled if volunteers are not available to perform the duties necessary to assure the event. Additionally, an event may not be pursued if the membership displays a lack of interest. All members are expected to volunteer and bring their part to the whole.

A sampling of events/activities that you would typically find on our LCHEA Calendar is provided below.

High School Graduation

A senior graduation is available to those who desire the experience of participating in a recognition ceremony with homeschooled friends. A photographer and videographer usually are present to record the event. Planning meetings are held throughout the school year but it is important to join early in June prior to senior year because senior yearbook photos are scheduled before the start of the school year. Seniors and participating families are actively involved in this process. Additional information may be found in the LCHEA Guidelines document.

Student Council

LCHEA has two student councils, student governments in which students make decisions about and conduct service projects and social activities. These groups are available for students in grades 8th through 12th.

National Homeschool Honor Society

LCHEA high school students participate in the National Homeschool Honor Society, Eta Sigma Alpha. Eligible 9th through 12th grade LCHEA students may apply. College scholarships have been awarded to graduating National Honor Society members.

Junior/Senior Prom

This annual social evening may be attended by LCHEA juniors and seniors and their guests. Dress is either formal or related to the banquet’s theme. Additional information may be found in the LCHEA Guidelines document.

Father-Daughter Dance

This elegant affair with an ambiance similar to that of a prom allows fathers and their daughters to enjoy a fun formal event together.

STEM Event

LCHEA’s science event is open to LCHEA students of all ages. Projects may be completed by individuals or by groups of students. Participants display materials which describe their projects. Outside guests may be invited to speak to the group or provide science activities for the families.

Yearbook

Our full-color, hardcover yearbook is produced almost entirely by LCHEA high school students overseen by an adult coordinator. The student staff members photograph activities, design and build yearbook pages, and sell advertising. High school credit may be given for yearbook staff participation. Seniors are given special recognition in the yearbook, but must be actively involved in the process beginning early in the summer, the start of the LCHEA membership year. Student portraits of students in K-4 though 11th grade, similar to those taken of students in traditional schools, are taken by a professional photographer in the fall.

Used Curriculum Sale

Each year in late spring or early summer, LCHEA holds a sale during which members may sell curriculum and other education-related materials. Only LCHEA members may sell, but shopping is open to the public.

Field Trips

LCHEA members schedule many field trips throughout the year. Our numbers generally allow us to schedule our activities at rates lower than those paid by individuals. Usually reservation payments made by member families are nonrefundable but may be transferred to other LCHEA members. Field trips are promoted on our email forums and on our calendar.

Forums

LCHEA maintains many forums/loops so that members may transmit and receive information easily and quickly. With such freedom comes responsibility to assure that all communications are appropriate and written in a gentle, considerate, Christian manner. Individuals who fail to abide by these standards may lose the ability to communicate through our email forums/loops and ultimately, may forfeit their membership to LCHEA. All forums are designed for communication between parents; a few google group loops facilitate communication to and between students, along with their parents.
